🇫🇷 Citroën BX 4TC
1 of 62-86 approximately
The Citroën BX 4TC is one of the most fascinating, eccentric, and ill-fated machines to ever emerge from the legendary Group B era of the World Rally Championship (WRC).
While it didn't find glory on the WRC, its extreme rarity and unique underdog story have turned it into a highly coveted collector's item today.
Unlike rivals like the Audi Sport Quattro or Peugeot 205 T16—which utilized custom spaceframe chassis and mid-engine layouts—Citroën was constrained by a tight budget and corporate mandate. They had to use as many standard BX Series 1 parts and monocoque elements as possible.
The Engine:
They used a 2,142 cc turbocharged inline-four engine (derived from an old Chrysler/Simca design used in the Peugeot 505 Turbo). Mounted longitudinally up front, it created a massive front overhang that heavily favored understeer.
Suspension:
True to Citroën form, it retained the brand’s signature hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension. While great for soaking up bumps, it behaved poorly under hard rally racing conditions, contributing to poor handling and heavy weight transfer.
Transmission:
It used a 5-speed manual gearbox originally sourced from the aging Citroën SM.
The competition version—dubbed the BX 4TC Evo—produced around 380 horsepower, significantly less than front-running competitors pushing well past 500 hp.
Combined with a severe weight penalty (it was nearly 200 kg heavier than minimum regulations required), the car was uncompetitive
This rare car was spotted at another show during the weekend.
