While todayโs arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces allegations that will change his life forever.

IMPD homicide detectives have arrested a juvenile for his alleged role in the May 28th murder of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham.
On Thursday, May 28th, 2026, IMPD officers were near a parking garage in the 100 block of S. Capitol Avenue when they were notified of a possible gunshot being fired inside the garage. Several officers entered the parking garage and located a victim, later identified as Mr. Scrogham, in a vehicle with a gunshot wound(s). He was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
IMPD homicide detectives responded to begin their investigation. After reviewing available video footage, evidence, and speaking to witnesses, detectives identified a juvenile male as the suspect in this case. The IMPD Violent Crimes Unit was tasked with locating him, and on Wednesday, June 3rd, the suspect was taken into custody on Indyโs west side.
โWhile todayโs arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces allegations that will change his life forever,โ said Chief Tanya Terry.
โThis arrest is the result of countless hours of dedicated work by our IMPD detectives, officers, and US Marshalls. While today's announcement marks an important step forward in this investigation, it cannot heal or ease the pain felt by Mr. Scroghamโs family, friends, and loved ones. This case is a tragic reminder that a single act of violence can alter countless lives in an instant,โ Chief added.
Detectives are working with the Marion County Prosecutorโs Office, which will make the final charging decisions. The suspect should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

As many kids have more free time, IMPD has launched our โStay Aware, Show You Careโ campaign with tips to help parents and guardians stay connected and informed.

Talk with your kids about curfew, and decide how often they should check in
Utilize location-sharing apps to our child. If you are using a location-tracking app, be honest about it. Explain that itโs a tool for safety, not a lack of trust
Know where your kids are and who theyโre with
Establish rules about parties, gatherings, and sleepovers
Set expectations for social media and phone use
Make sure your child always has a safe ride home plan
Know the parents of your childโs friends whenever possible. Having their contact information in your phone is essential for emergencies or quick plan changes.
Keep communication open. Kids are more likely to follow rules when they feel heard.
Starting these conversations early builds trust and sets the tone for a safe and fun summer ahead!

Thank you for a fun and safe parade, and we look forward to seeing you tomorrow for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing!
Indianapolis would not be able to host the greatest spectacle in racing without our dedicated first responders. Thatโs why every year, before the festivities of race weekend, I take time to thank our public safety officials for all they do.
Sidecar ride offered, sidecar ride accepted.
Grateful to join our community at the @500Festival Parade.

Before leaving, know exactly where you are parking and where you are sitting. Familiarize yourself with road closures and travel instructions, as traffic is expected to be heavy, especially for the 2026 Indy 500 on May 24th.
Traffic increases significantly, so arriving early helps avoid long delays. Gates open early, and many fans recommend being in the area by 6 a.m. to beat the heaviest traffic.
Be prepared for warm weather and direct sun, as the track is often warmer than surrounding areas. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Familiarize yourself with what is allowed inside. Coolers cannot exceed 18โx 14โx 14โ, and glass bottles are prohibited. Follow all instructions from police and yellow-shirt staff.
Expect heavy traffic, particularly after the race. Plan for a slow getaway or stay to enjoy post-race festivities while traffic clears.
I am so thankful our officer was able to be released from the hospital today, but his road to recovery is just beginning.
I am grateful for his courage, and for the many public servants who put themselves in harmโs way every day to protect our community.
We are grateful to share that the IMPD officer who was shot yesterday while bravely serving our community was released from the hospital today.
The officer was surrounded by fellow officers and dedicated medical staff who provided exceptional care and support throughout his recovery in the hospital.
While the healing journey is just beginning, we remain incredibly proud of this officer and all of our officers for their courage, resilience, and steadfast commitment to the people of Indianapolis.
Our goal is always prevention first, not punishment.
While a curfew is not a cure-all, it is just one tool to keep our kids out of unsafe situations late at night. We want parents to stay involved by knowing where their kids are, who they are with & when they are coming home.
Council adopts Proposal No. 99, 2026, authorizing the city to advance the curfew hours to "public safety" curfew hours, pursuant to IC 31-37-3-4 and Chapter 381, Sec. 103-105 of the Revised Code.
This is May, Indy! ๐
Excited to get my first official milk container from @IMS this morning. IMPD is geared up and running full throttle all month long.
