For this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re highlighting Dr. Donna Kimmaliardjuk, Faculty of Medicine alumna, and Canada’s first Inuk heart surgeon! 🧡🫀
After learning that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) took her paternal grandfather’s life, preventing her from ever meeting him, she became determined to become a surgeon: “At six years old, I decided, ‘I want to be a surgeon. I want to invent a surgery to cure ALS.’”
She would eventually shift her focus to cardiac surgery, and now works at the Cleveland Clinic, where she specializes in advanced coronary revascularization, coronary artery bypass grafting, and myectomy surgery—making her the first Inuk surgeon to practice in this specialty.
Dr. Kimmaliardjuk’s story is an inspiration for women and girls pursuing science and medicine. Read more about her and her story ➡️ https://t.co/9gINDOAR3s

🧠🩸 Age-adjusted D-dimer works for DVT too!
In a multinational prospective study (n=3,205), an age-adjusted cutoff safely ruled out DVT, increasing exclusions by +7.4% with 0% failures at 3 months.
📉 Fewer scans, same safety.

🚨 Pregnancy-associated VTE & racial disparitiesat #ASH25
In a population study of 442,816 pregnancies, 1,793 VTEs occurred (4.0/1,000). Asian & Black individuals had lower VTE incidence (aRR 0.48 & 0.73) but more diagnostic delays + higher acute-care use after VTE.
🩺 17-fold ↑ ED visits in week pre-diagnosis. @IMYanXu
Every ER doc in Canada - myself included - needs to listen to Rowan Hamilton's dad. This healthy 20-year old had SOB, tachycardia, blurry vision, cough of mucous and blood, normal CXR, d/c on ABx.
The next day he collapsed with PEA and found with PEs.

🩸 Meta-analysis presented at #ISTH2025 and simultaneously published in @ehj_ed found that several risk factors (e.g., previous history of VTE or bleeding, advanced cancer, and specific cancer sites) are associated with recurrent VTE and bleeding in patients with CAT.
https://t.co/B26fyNXXaA
🩸 Important findings from Dr @IMYanXu at #ISTH2025:
Black individuals on extended anticoagulation for secondary VTE prevention had higher rates of major bleeding, including ICH, than White individuals.
🔎 No difference in CRNMB.
