The good thing is that the Catholic Church is not disorganised. She has a clear hierarchical structure. In Nigeria, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) remains at the forefront of the Church’s affairs. Official statements from the Conference are communicated through the proper channels, and national Catholic organisations work in communion with and under the guidance of the bishops.

A document like this should immediately raise serious questions, not only about its authenticity, but also about the extent to which some persons may be willing to go to suppress or distort the truth for political ends.

I hope no Nigerian is deceived into believing it without first verifying its source.

This purported letter circulating in the name of the National Catholic Youth body bears several obvious errors that cast serious doubt on its authenticity.

1. The letterhead reads Catholic Youth Association of Nigeria (CYAN). That is incorrect. The official body is the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON).

2. The official CYON motto is "Let Your Light Shine," not "Christ Our Light" as written on the letterhead.

3. An official national correspondence of CYON would ordinarily bear the signatures of the National President, National Secretary, and National Chaplain (a priest). It would not be signed by a single individual identifying himself as the "National Executive Council."

4. The expression "National Executive Council" itself sounds more like governmental terminology than the established structure of a Catholic lay organization.

5. There is an important distinction between speaking on national issues and being partisan. The Church has both the right and the duty to address matters affecting the common good without becoming an arm of any political party.

Finally, people should stop using the names of Catholic organizations to spread misinformation. Truth matters.

Happy 57th priestly ordination anniversary to Cardinal John Onaiyekan!

Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan was ordained a priest in 1969 at the age of 25.

In 1982, 13 years after his priestly ordination, Pope St. John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Thunusuda and Auxiliary Bishop of Ilorin at the age of 38. He was ordained a bishop on 6 January 1983.

In 1984, he was appointed the Bishop of Ilorin at the age of 40.

In 1990, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Abuja at the age of 46, and in 1992, he succeeded as Bishop of Abuja at the age of 48.

In 1994, following the establishment of Abuja as a Metropolitan See, he became the first Archbishop of Abuja at the age of 50.

From 1999 to 2006, he served as President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI created him a Cardinal at the age of 68.

On November 9, 2019, he retired as the Archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria after reaching the canonical retirement age of 75.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan has remained one of the most respected voices of the Catholic Church in Africa, distinguished by his commitment to the Gospel, justice, peace, interreligious dialogue, good governance, and the common good. May God continue to bless and strengthen him.

If a policy leaves millions of families unable to afford food, transport, healthcare, or keep their businesses alive, then it’s time to re-examine it.

Economic models mean little to a parent who can’t feed their children or a business owner shutting down because operating costs have become unbearable.

Policies should be judged not only by theory, but by how people actually live.

Leadership must be courageous enough to admit when a policy is causing widespread suffering and be willing to change course.
