Minister Umahi speaks on the realignment of the Lagos- Calabar coastal highway, says the project is intact, explains what he meant by the alignment of the East-West road to the project
Infact, listen for learning sake
These videos/Images are from the Calabar section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway
Still in doubt? Take a drive to Akampa, Cross River State and see the work yourself.
Construction is active across the corridor: • Section 1: VI – Eleko (Lagos) • Section 2: Eleko – Ode-Omi (Lagos/Ogun) • Sections 3A & 3B: Cross River & Akwa Ibom • Sections 4A & 4B: Ogun & Ondo
A TALE OF THE ROADS THAT NEVER MEET:
LAGOS-CALABAR COASTAL ROAD.
You might be wondering the current progress of the construction works ongoing, that's not a problem.
A breakdown of the road work is here.

LAGOS–CALABAR COASTAL HIGHWAY ALIGNMENT SUMMARY BY STATE
(INDICATING APPROXIMATE DISTANCES, KEY LANDMARKS, AND ROUTE CHARACTERISTICS)
1. LAGOS STATE
Approx. Length: ~50 km
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
The highway originates at Point Zero on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, proceeding eastward across the Lekki Peninsula. It continues through Eleko and interfaces with major industrial infrastructure, notably the Dangote Refinery corridor, forming a critical access spine to Lagos State’s eastern coastal growth axis.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Urban and peri-urban coastal terrain
High traffic demand corridor
Integration with existing arterial and metropolitan road networks
2. OGUN STATE
Approx. Length: ~80 km
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
The alignment extends through Ogun State’s coastal fringe, running in proximity to the Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ). This segment is designed to support industrial logistics, port-related activities, and the development of future coastal economic zones.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Predominantly undeveloped coastal land
Industrial and export-processing zone connectivity
3. ONDO STATE
Approx. Length: ~100 km
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
The highway traverses the Araromi coastal axis, passing through oil-producing and energy-rich coastal communities. The alignment seeks to balance improved access to hydrocarbon assets with reduced impacts on sensitive coastal ecosystems.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Oil and gas production corridor
Coastal plains with swampy and weak subgrade conditions
4. EDO STATE
Approx Length: ~100 km
REALIGNMENT NOTE:
Although initially excluded from the main corridor, a subsequent realignment incorporated approximately 100 km to integrate Edo State’s coastal communities, ensuring continuity and inclusivity within the overall coastal highway network.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Strategic connectivity, inclusion of Coastal and riverine terrain
5. DELTA STATE
Approx. Length: ~100 km.
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
The route passes through the Escravos and Forcados coastal zones, areas characterized by extensive creek systems, tidal waterways, and dense oil and gas infrastructure.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Significant bridge, culvert, and embankment requirements
Challenging geotechnical and hydrological conditions
6. BAYELSA STATE
Approx. Length: ~60 km
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
The highway traverses coastal barrier island forests, skirting environmentally sensitive areas near the Edumanom Forest Reserve.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Mangrove and swamp forest environment
Environmentally sensitive alignment requiring mitigation measures
7. RIVERS STATE
Approx. Length: ~70 km.
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
This segment connects the Port Harcourt coastal axis, strengthening access to Nigeria’s principal oil, gas, and maritime service hub.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Industrial and port-oriented traffic demand
Interface with existing urban and utility infrastructure.
8. AKWA IBOM STATE
Approx. Length: ~80 km
ALIGNMENT NOTE
A recent realignment was implemented to bypass approximately 19 km of sensitive coastal areas, a questionable deviation from the original design and alignment. This curious 11th hour adjustment has generated public discourse among stakeholders and the affected coastal communities regarding the rationale and implications of the revised alignment.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Revised coastal corridor allegedly to safe cost and purportedly to improve geometric efficiency and reduced environmental exposure
9. CROSS RIVER STATE
Approx. Length: ~60 km.
ALIGNMENT DESCRIPTION
The highway terminates in Calabar, with this section currently under active construction. The alignment provides a strategic coastal gateway to southeastern Nigeria and the wider Gulf of Guinea region.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Terminal urban approach
Ongoing construction and associated traffic management activities
Overall Corridor Significance
Enhances east–west coastal mobility across southern Nigeria
Supports industrialization port, and tourism.
