🇱🇹 Vilnius today.
They seem to think that their right to pass whatever law they want is above our Constitution. But in reality, the freedom to seek, receive, and share information belongs to the people- not to parliament. It’s a people’s freedom.
Hands off!
Let me explain something to the MAGA crowd, because clearly someone needs to.
They seem to think NATO is cosmic room service. You pick up the phone, say “hello, we’re having a bit of a war here,” and thirty-one countries march to your rescue. A continental Uber for military adventures.
That is not how it works.
Article 5 is a mutual defense clause. The clue is in the word mutual. And it has been triggered exactly once in NATO’s entire history. After September 11. When America was attacked. Not Europe. America.
Every NATO member showed up. They went to Afghanistan. They fought. They bled. They died. In America’s war. On America’s behalf.
Now imagine they hadn’t.
Over 1,100 allied soldiers died in Afghanistan. British, Canadian, German, Danish, Polish. And yes, even Ukrainian soldiers, who had no NATO obligation whatsoever. Gone. Without them, those are American names on those graves. Sons from Ohio. Fathers from Georgia. Kids from Nebraska who never came home.
Then there is the money. NATO allies spent over 100 billion dollars on a war that started on American soil. Without that, Washington pays every cent. On top of the 2 to 3 trillion the war already cost.
And without allied bases across Europe and Central Asia, American supply lines collapse entirely. Without British forces in Helmand and Canadians in Kandahar, the Taliban reconstitutes in three years instead of ten. The gaps get filled one way. More American deployments. More American coffins arriving at Dover.
Afghanistan was bloody. But NATO took the hit. Without them, every single one of those casualties would have had an American name.
Trump called allies like these losers. Suckers.
If you are a certain kind of broken person, that probably makes sense to you. But for the rest of us, what those soldiers did has a different name. Honor. The bond between men who have been in the same dirt, under the same fire. Between Brits and Americans, Frenchmen and Norwegians, Canadians and Danes. Not a diplomatic relationship. A blood bond. Brotherhood forged in places most people will never see and cannot imagine.
In that culture, you do not mock a fallen ally. You do not sneer at the dead. It is the lowest thing a human being can do. Trump did it to a standing ovation.
If you are a MAGA supporter travelling to NATO countries, understand this. There are no friendly pats on the back waiting for you. No one will buy you a beer. The governments who share your worldview sit in Minsk, Moscow and Pyongyang. Brutal dictatorships where journalists disappear, elections are theatre and dissent is a medical condition treated in basements. Not London. Not Paris. Not Rome, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin or Ottawa.
You have abandoned the open societies, the free press, the rule of law, the places where people actually want to live. You traded the best of civilization for a very small, very dark room. Frankly, it serves you right.

People who were killed by the soviet army in front of the TV tower in Vilnius on the night of January 13, 1991.
For us, they are like the Heavenly Hundred in Ukraine.
Always in our heart, never to be forgotten.

Why the Balts hate May 9.
World War II started with a handshake between Stalin and Hitler in 1939 — the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. In secret, they carved up Eastern Europe. Poland was split. The Baltics were assigned to Stalin.
Then came the invasions. Nazis from the west, Soviets from the east. Hitler struck first on Sept 1, 1939. Stalin came in from the east on Sept 17. Poland was erased.
In 1940, it was our turn. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania were occupied without a shot. Our governments were dismantled, our officers executed, our flags taken down, our people sent to Siberia.
In a single year, tens of thousands disappeared. Soldiers, teachers, farmers, mothers, children — anyone seen as a potential threat to Soviet control. Some were shot. Many froze to death in cattle cars on the way to the Gulag.
This was before the Nazis even arrived.
Then Came Hitler. Then Stalin Again.
In 1941, when Hitler betrayed Stalin and pushed east, many in the Baltics thought maybe — maybe — we’d get our countries back. That didn’t happen. Many locals were then forced to fight for the Nazis. Not because they loved Hitler, but because it seemed like the only way to avoid Soviet return.
Enemy of your enemy is your friend, right?
Later, when the Soviets pushed Hitler back and re-occupied us in 1944, the same thing happened in reverse. Men were dragged into the Red Army — sometimes the very same people who had fought for the Germans the year before. It wasn’t heroism. It was survival.
And let’s be clear: Stalin’s return wasn’t peace. It was purges, censorship, russification, more deportations, more fear. The mass graves didn’t stop.
To us, Stalin wasn’t a liberator. He was a partner in Hitler’s crimes.
Nazis sent people to concentration camps. Soviets sent them to Gulags.
Nazis erased cultures. Soviets erased identities.
Both used forced labor, propaganda, torture, and fear as tools of control.
This is why we don’t put flowers on Soviet tanks. Why May 9 is a day of mourning, not celebration.
And when Russians tomorrow march under the old red flag shouting “We defeated fascism,” we hear something different. We hear denial. Arrogance. A refusal to acknowledge what Stalin did to us.
Two empires used our land, our people, our lives as pawns in their fight for power.
And one of them stuck around for 50 years, calling it peace and liberation.
So no, we don’t see WWII the same way as Russians. We never will.
Trump claims the EU imposes a 39% tariff on the U.S., but the actual average is around 1%. In 2023, the U.S. collected €7 billion in tariffs on EU exports, while the EU collected €3 billion on U.S. exports.
The U.S. figure likely includes VAT and non-tariff barriers in some way.

Russia is imperialist and has always been imperialist. This is what today’s Russians have inherited from their past. In Lithuania, we know all about the history of Russian “culture and humanity” from bitter experience. Some examples… 🧵1/10
On this day in 1939, Stalin made "peace" with Hitler, dividing up other people's land, creating spheres of influence and so-called "republics". The oppression continued for decades. There was no "peace", there was only misery and murder. Now you know why Ukraine keeps fighting.
