Navel orangeworm egg laying activity in almonds has been going up - not surprising for given the high overwintering populations and the prevalence of mummy nuts out there. Keep track of what’s happening throughout the season is crucial. Numbers from Modesto area.
🚨 A new invasive beetle is going after our almonds and pistachios and farmers are waking up to find their crops eaten away.
I’m pushing the @USDA for an emergency response to nip this in the bud before these pests cause real damage and hurt our economy.

A new beetle that attacks nuts has been confirmed in Stanislaus, Merced, Madera and Kings counties.
“It has likely been here for a few years based on the damage we’ve seen," @IPMCorner tells @ToddFitchette https://t.co/QlDYMll00H
As a result of climate change, #CA's farms are expected to face a surge in #ag pests, which poses a threat to the state's specialty crops industry. UC researchers will help develop a holistic climate-smart pest management strategy to build resilience. https://t.co/9JIu2R5nEk
We had a fun this morning talking with future scientists at San Joaquin County AgVenture in Manteca. Proud of my team for organizing the amazing booth, @sama_sakaki, Mahesh Ghimire, Chang Vue, and volunteer Rebekah. Over 3000 kids attended the event @ucanr@UCCEStanislaus@UCIPM
@UCANRpam@UCANRpam, you are overthinking it 😄 we use window screen to glue almonds to create portable nut strands. We can put these out in the field treated with insecticide and untreated control. NOW natural population infests them. and we compare infestation rates among treatments.

@jen_l_espinoza They are immature stages of the False Chinch bug. They tend to aggregate in the area near the homes and sometimes in plants nearby, especially when the vegetation they feed on dries out. More info here: https://t.co/j2k4XDGKG4
Latest on flight and projected generation timing of navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella - a notorious pest of tree nuts in California (Calculations are based on Modesto area weather/trap counts) @SJVtandv@UCCEStanislaus@SacOrchards@UCIPM
Navel orangeworm counts are going up. When there are “hullsplit” almonds which release volatiles that is attractive to gravid NOW females for egg laying. Both NOW activity and hullsplit progression are two critical factors to time insecticide spray effectively. @ucanr@UCIPM
This week, we have seen increased navel orangeworm counts (Fig. 1; e.g., ~38.6 eggs/trap/week, Modesto area). This increase occurred after 1000 degree-days from the spring egg-laying biofix (i.e., 26 April). From now on, it is critical to closely monitor…https://t.co/cEtFSk1Hh0
Applying entomopathogenic nematodes for flatheaded borer, Chrysobothris mali, in walnuts. This pest has been damaging several walnut orchards each specially when trees are little stressed, sunburn, and may not have best growth. You may not detect the stress level visually!@ucanr
Our last IPM breakfast meeting-8th one, for this year. Dr. Robert VanSteenwyk is delivering a talk on husk fly. Thanks to all participants, 35-55 attendees per meeting. Very happy with the support from the growers, PCAs, and industry. See you in the next March. @UCIPM@ucanr
@JoeDelBosque@moniquejrivera It’s an advanced nymphal stage of Say stink bug or Chlorochroa. They are polyphagous. We found them in almond/pistachio orchards occasionally. They are not green stink bugs mwhich is much bigger problem in nut orchards.
