Bangladesh: Killing of Local Political Activist Raises Serious Human Rights Concerns
The killing of a local political activist in Jashore has renewed concerns about political violence, impunity, and the protection of fundamental human rights in Bangladesh.
Jewel Rana, a member of the Patibila Union Youth League, died on 11 June after being severely injured in an attack in Chowgacha Upazila, according to police and hospital officials. Family members have accused local activists associated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of carrying out the assault, while police say preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a political dispute.
Regardless of political affiliation, the right to life is a fundamental human right protected under both Bangladesh’s Constitution and international human rights law. The brutal nature of the attack, as described by witnesses and relatives, underscores the urgent need for a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.
Human rights principles require that allegations of politically motivated violence be investigated without bias and that all suspects be afforded due process under the law. At the same time, victims and their families are entitled to justice, truth, and effective remedies.
The incident has also drawn attention to broader concerns about retaliatory violence following political transitions. Human rights advocates have repeatedly warned that cycles of revenge, intimidation, and politically motivated attacks undermine the rule of law and contribute to a climate of fear within communities.
Particularly troubling are allegations made by the victim’s family regarding the treatment of Jewel Rana during the attack. Family members claim he was denied assistance while seriously injured and that his wife was assaulted while attempting to protect him. These allegations have not been independently verified, but if substantiated, they would represent grave violations of human dignity and basic humanitarian standards.
The case highlights the importance of ensuring equal protection under the law for all citizens, irrespective of their political beliefs or affiliations. Human rights organizations have long maintained that political differences must never be settled through violence.
Authorities have stated that several individuals have been questioned and that efforts are ongoing to arrest those responsible. Human rights observers will likely monitor whether the investigation is conducted independently and whether those found responsible are held accountable through legal processes.
As Bangladesh continues to navigate political tensions, this case serves as a reminder that justice, accountability, and respect for human rights remain essential to preventing further violence and protecting democratic values. The protection of life, security, and political freedoms must apply equally to every citizen, regardless of party affiliation.

From vaccine success story to massive measles outbreak
Prior to this outbreak, Bangladesh was making progress toward eliminating measles with its robust, community-led vaccine program and was held up as a model for lower resource counties.
In 2019, then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed received The Vaccine Hero Award from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance in recognition of the country's "tremendous strides."
Then came 2024.
The long-time regime was ousted and an interim government took charge. During its 18 months in power, the temporary leaders decided to revamp the vaccination system. The new plan did not go smoothly.
There were bureaucratic delays. Soon, the country's vaccine supply was disrupted. The shots became unavailable; immunization campaigns were postponed.
This did not go unnoticed. Rana Flowers — the @UNICEF representative to Bangladesh – said in a press conference on May 20 that she had repeatedly warned the government over the past two years that the delays could trigger a crisis. "I sat with the interim adviser and the staff on at least 10 occasions saying, 'We are worried. Look at my face. I am worried. You're going to face a mountain,' " recounted Flowers.
Other groups — including the @WHO and @gavi — also publicly urged the government last year to take action!

At least 400+ mothers are grieving their biggest loss as a preventable measles outbreak killed their children. Thousands are toiling hard, spending sleepless nights to help their hospitalised children win the battle for life from measles. Millions are in a frantic race to keep their children unaffected by measles.
Such agony, pain, suffering, grief, and anguish of millions of mothers testify to the deadly outcome of a murderous health policy pursued by the Yunus regime that deprived children of vaccination, fueling the outbreak.
Bangladesh prevented such deaths for decades, prioritising vaccination, a reminder that ensuring the right to vaccination is a responsibility of the state.
No compensation can fill up these empty mother lapses.
Ending impunity to that Yunus made a death spree is the least the state can ensure.

Warm greetings to all working people of Bangladesh on the great occasion of May Day.
The Bangladesh Awami League is a party of the masses. The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the daughter of democracy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have always worked for the welfare of working people and remained committed to protecting their rights.
After forming the government in 1972, two groundbreaking decisions were taken for farmers. First, land tax was waived for holdings up to 25 bighas, and farmers were granted loan waivers amounting to 700 million taka. To ensure fair wages for workers, a new 10-tier pay commission was introduced, along with the formation of a wage commission. It was the Awami League government that declared May Day a national holiday. In 1972, under Bangabandhu’s leadership, Bangladesh became a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and through his efforts, an ILO office was established in the country. Bangabandhu also incorporated workers’ rights into the Constitution. The importance he placed on labor rights is evident in the inclusion of socialism as a fundamental state principle—aimed at building a society free from exploitation, which the Constitution defines as a core responsibility of the state. Bangabandhu once said, “This independence will only be meaningful to me when the suffering of the farmers, workers, and the poor people of Bengal comes to an end.” However, due to foreign conspiracies and the greed of traitorous military personnel, he was assassinated prematurely. With his loss, the country fell into disarray, and the suffering of the poor deepened under anti-liberation forces and military rule.
In 2009, Sheikh Hasina, the worthy successor of Bangabandhu and one of Bangladesh’s most successful prime ministers, began working to realize his vision. Up until 2024, her government worked tirelessly to protect workers’ rights, ensuring fair wages, workplace safety, occupational health, and maintaining industrial peace and stability while keeping the economy running. During the Awami League’s tenure, the minimum wage for garment workers increased from 8,000 taka to 12,500 taka. In collaboration with the ILO, a tripartite national action plan on fire safety in the garment sector was adopted, involving workers, owners, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment. This led to improved building safety and better working conditions. Through the Workers Welfare Foundation, Sheikh Hasina also introduced support programs for workers’ children’s education.
During its 15 years in power, the Awami League government ensured the implementation of the Bangladesh Labour Rules 2015, amendments to the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, an increase in the retirement age for workers, initiatives on fire and building safety, the National Labour Policy 2012, the National Child Labour Elimination Policy 2010, the National Occupational Health and Safety Policy 2012, the National Skills Development Policy 2011, and the establishment of the Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation Fund. These initiatives strengthened worker protection and contributed to the country’s economic stability.
Since August 2024, however, Bangladesh’s labor market has again faced a severe downturn, and the lives of working people have become extremely difficult. Due to mob attacks and illegal occupations under the Yunus government, hundreds of factories have shut down, leaving over 200,000 people newly unemployed. Despite a change in government, the situation has not improved. Programs that previously helped over 10 million low-income families access essential goods at subsidized prices—such as allowances and family cards—have been discontinued. The poverty rate has increased from 20 percent to 27.93 percent, and unemployment has risen to 4.63 percent. The current government has no clear plan to address this crisis. Instead, it is accused of diverting project funds and preparing to leave the country, while introducing systems that primarily benefit ministers and bureaucrats. There is no visible roadmap from the BNP-Jamaat alliance to improve the lives of the people.
Only the Awami League truly prioritizes the protection of workers’ rights in this country.
There is no alternative to the Awami League in ensuring the liberation and welfare of workers.

Fuel Crisis or Engineered Pressure?
Holding the public hostage, fuel prices surge while supply remains restricted.
Despite tankers full of petrol and octane, pumps are running dry—raising serious questions about supply management. Reports suggest that local reserves are sufficient, yet distribution is being limited, triggering panic and long queues nationwide.
📊 Price Hike Impact (April):
• Octane: 140 taka (+20)
• Petrol: 135 taka (+19)
• Diesel: 115 taka (+15)
• LPG (12kg): 1,940 taka (+599)
Within hours, transport groups demanded fare hikes—up to 64% in cities and 37% on long routes—adding more pressure on everyday people.
⚠️ Meanwhile:
• Fertilizer factories shut due to gas shortages
• Garment sector hit by load shedding
• Fuel stations warn of possible shutdowns
Critics say this crisis may not be accidental—but part of a broader economic strategy with heavy consequences for the public.

As temperatures climb, millions across Bangladesh are being pushed into prolonged darkness. Daily power cuts now stretch from 7 to 10 hours in many areas—sometimes even longer. In rural regions, the situation is worse, with repeated outages disrupting lives from night till dawn.
Behind the crisis: soaring electricity demand, fuel shortages, and struggling power plants. At peak times, the deficit has crossed 1,800 MW.
Authorities have shortened office hours and ordered early mall closures—but many questions remain: is it enough?
With heat rising and fuel issues unresolved, experts warn the worst may still lie ahead.
For millions, darkness is no longer temporary—it’s becoming routine.

Shirin Sharmin, the Speaker, has been arrested in a fabricated July case.
According to the case statement, on August 5 she was also on the streets alongside the police against the July militants. Then what about the incident where the army rescued her from inside Parliament at 2:30 a.m.?
When a country no longer has laws or the rule of law, it descends into extreme disorder. Bangladesh is being deliberately pushed in that direction.
Today, this drama has been staged to divert attention from the public’s outcry over fuel, gas, electricity, fertilizer, and essential commodities. The media is busy covering Shirin Sharmin’s arrest, as if everything in the country is normal.
The people will respond to all of this very soon.
Repression and oppression cannot keep people subdued for long.

A formal UN communication has raised serious concerns over the political and human rights situation in Bangladesh, particularly the ban on the Awami League and the use of anti-terror and tribunal laws against its members. The UN flagged issues including mass arrests, restrictions on political speech and assembly, and alleged violations of fair trial rights. These developments point to a shrinking democratic space, where opposition voices are being sidelined and due process is increasingly questioned. As the country approaches a critical political juncture, the international community is being urged to closely monitor the situation and ensure that fundamental rights and democratic principles are upheld.
