NEW: Alberta’s redesigned driver’s licences and ID cards began rolling out today, now including a Canadian citizenship marker and, for eligible residents, their Personal Health Number directly on the card.
Alberta’s Information and Privacy Commissioner Diane McLeod has published three guidance documents in response, warning the changes create new risks for Albertans’ personal information.
McLeod had recommended against adding health numbers to ID cards back in December, citing fraud risk given personal health numbers are a sought-after commodity on the dark web.
