Could scandium be headed for a supercycle?
In this excellent @moneyofminepod podcast, @TRAVmoneyofmine and @JDmoneyofmine interview mining pundit the Koala about the potential for a surge in scandium demand driven by the expected growth of data centers and the solid oxide fuel cell technology to power them.
As the explosion of AI drives the rapid build out of data centers and puts stress on existing electricity
supply, solid oxide fuel cells have “gone from a cute niche power solution,” to a go-to solution for the likes
of Oracle and Brookfield, who are trying to build out compute and data centers as fast as they can, The
Koala commented.
Scandium is used to improve conductivity in solid oxide fuel cells, which convert fuels such as natural gas
directly into electricity.
Sunrise Energy Metals is developing the Syerston Scandium Project in the Australian state of New South
Wales. It is the world’s largest and highest-grade deposit of scandium and the only mine under
development that solely targets scandium as primary supply instead of as a by-product.
The deposit holds over 32,000 tonnes of contained scandium: enough to meet global demand for many decades to come.

“Bloom is price sensitive due to historical organizational behavior and survival instinct. But I think if we talk to an Oracle, a Brookfield, a Hyperscaler, let's use my 30 tons of gigawatt. 1000 a kilogram, that's a million a ton, that's 30 million of scandium and a gigawatt of compute metaphorically.
Let's take that up to 3000 a kilo, which would unlock the New South Wales belt. It would also unlock titanium waste streams. And it would probably get the Nickel Cobalt guys to at least think about putting on circuits.
So, look, I'm not that promotional guy, so we probably know the right number starts with a two, not three. But 30 million becomes 90 million…
…But 30 million becomes 90 million. 60 million of incremental cost on a $50 billion capital bill for a gigawatt of compute.
Okay. Does that change whether or not you're going to build the compute? No, it's just not.
It's 0.1%. Like the price of steel moving would matter more.”
@juhamac@YellowLabLife Plus … anything that’s a secondary strip / stream off a primary source, if the main stream gets curtailed for any reason you lose your Sc recovery … is that what you call securtof supply?
@juhamac@YellowLabLife So this is just at the study stage …. but even if it were to come online it’s just another drop in the bucket that doesn’t actually truly address the coming demand for Sc2O3

@KaiserResearch@Bloom_Energy Indeed time for Bloom to confirm how it gets comfort over its security of supply for scandium, as a component critical to what makes the product unique
In 2012 when @bloom_energy was still getting started it did a non-binding offtake deal with Metallica Minerals for 30-60 tpa Sc2O3 as a by-product from its nickel-cobalt Sconi project. That went nowhere and Bloom went on to secure its scandium supply from China by developing a way to recover scandium from titanium dioxide waste streams generated by pigment makers. Bloom Box sales growth did not meet expectations but in 2025 that changed when AI data centers realized they needed a localized supply of electricity that did not come from grids that served civilians.
The world changed for Bloom as it secured deals to supply up to 2.8 GW of Bloom Box capacity for the likes of @Oracle. The stock price has increased tenfold from a year ago and the company today has a market cap of $64 billion. Bloom Energy will release its Q1 2026 financials today and hold a conference call at 2 pm Pacific Time.

Bloom is a great story but there is a hard question KR Sridhar must answer. How much scandium oxide per 100 kW of Bloom Box is required and where will it come from so that 2.8 GW of Bloom Box capacity can be delivered over the next few years?
USGS estimated 60 tonnes was produced in 2025 from a variety of non scalable by-product sources, much of it from China which now has dual use restrictions on scandium exports.
@SunriseMetals has completed a DFS for its Syerston scandium project whose initial version can produce 60 tpa, with a parallel track with 120 tpa output. A solid offtake agreement would eliminate any concern about scandium supply for Bloom, and it would lay the foundation for future aluminum-scandium alloy demand growth. And secure Bloom's future.
