📍 #AIDS2026@KELINKenya's @PesaOkania presented an abstract on "The Impact of Evergreening on Access to HIV Treatment in Kenya."
The research found that patent evergreening—extending patents through minor modifications—can delay affordable generic ARVs, keep medicine prices high, and limit access to life-saving HIV treatment.
The study calls for stronger IP laws, full use of TRIPS flexibilities, and transparent trade negotiations to safeguard access to essential medicines and protect the right to health.

📍 #AIDS2026@KELINKenya's @PesaOkania presented an abstract on "TRIPS Plus Provisions in Free Trade Agreements and their Impact on Access to Medicines in Kenya."
The research found that TRIPS Plus provisions—such as market exclusivity and patent linkage—can delay the entry of affordable generic medicines, increase treatment costs, weaken local pharmaceutical production, and limit access to life-saving medicines, particularly for people living with HIV and those affected by TB.
The study calls for stronger public health safeguards in trade negotiations, greater transparency, and full use of TRIPS flexibilities to protect Kenya's constitutional right to health and advance Universal Health Coverage.

If you want to understand what ITPC means when it says medicines are public goods, the poster hall at Riocentro is the place to be between 12:00 and 13:00 BRT today. #AIDS2026#MakeMedicinesAffordable#WatchWhatMatters
Today is the biggest research day of the conference for ITPC. Six MMA and IP posters in the exhibition hall. One CLM skills lab. Researchers standing by their evidence and practitioners building the skills to use it.
Day 3 at #AIDS2026@KELINKenya joins the #MakeMedicinesAffordable coalition in calling for equitable access to alimatravir (MK-8527).
We urge:
✅ Governments in excluded countries, including Brazil, to use TRIPS flexibilities, including compulsory licensing and patent oppositions—to challenge unaffordable pricing.
✅ Generic manufacturers to produce Alimatravir without requiring Merck's permission.
New analysis from the University of Liverpool shows Alimatravir could be produced for just US$3 per person per year.

Sergiy Kondratyuk presented from Ukraine this morning by video link. The war kept him from Rio. It did not keep the work from being heard.
Lenacapavir: $25–46 to produce. $28,218 in the US. A 795-fold difference.
These are not market forces. They're choices.

Two ITPC presentations. One argument.

A year’s supply of the monthly PrEP pill alimatravir could cost just $3 to make. Yet Merck’s licence excludes Brazil & other countries with high HIV rates, restricting access to affordable generics.
This is not equitable access. It is corporate control.

How do you fund CLM when fiscal space is shrinking? How do you generate data when civic space is
closing? How do you turn evidence into policy when the political environment is working against you?
Those are the questions on the table at SY03 10:30 in Rm 204

Day 2 at #AIDS2026
As the @KELINKenya delegation continues engaging in sessions at the International AIDS Conference, one message continues to stand out: equity is essential to reaching the last mile.
Across discussions with governments, communities, and partners, we've heard a common call to rethink how we finance and deliver health programmes. Life-saving innovations can only make a difference if they are consistently available to the people who need them. Interrupted supply chains mean interrupted treatment, lost momentum, and lives at risk.
Building on the conference theme of Rebuild. Rethink. Rise., we must strengthen inclusive health systems, rethink sustainable financing, and ensure no one is left behind.

@OMellouk received the inaugural Global Health Catalyst Award from @Grindr4Equality last night at #AIDS2026.
He was recognized for decades of advocacy, movement-building and commitment to community-led solutions in the global HIV response.

#AIDS2026 has begun. Rio de Janeiro. 8000 people. One question: who gets access to the medicines that can end AIDS, who is locked out and who decides? ITPC is here. In the sessions, in the Global Village, anywhere communities need us. #RethinkRebuildRise
The International AIDS Conference has been a critical site of engagement in the HIV response and broader issues. Who can forget the speeches by Stephen Lewis and Nelson Mandela? Or the interventions by communities? #AIDS2026 has started in Rio de Janeiro with pre-conferences. Today, TAC comrades - @Ndivhu_Rambau and @BlackJeezus011 - will be speaking at @ITPCglobal's “HIV treatment at a crossroads: Community power in the age of austerity and algorithms”.
We kicked off our #AIDS2026 engagement today with KELIN Executive Director @AllanMaleche speaking on the panel Treatment at a Crossroads.
He highlighted the need to protect civic space, strengthen accountability, keep communities at the centre of the HIV response, and safeguard access to quality, affordable medicines.
