@KELINKenya's @PesaOkania presented an abstract on "The Impact of Evergreening on Access to HIV Treatment in Kenya."

The research found that patent evergreening—extending patents through minor modifications—can delay affordable generic ARVs, keep medicine prices high, and limit access to life-saving HIV treatment.

The study calls for stronger IP laws, full use of TRIPS flexibilities, and transparent trade negotiations to safeguard access to essential medicines and protect the right to health.

@KELINKenya's @PesaOkania presented an abstract on "TRIPS Plus Provisions in Free Trade Agreements and their Impact on Access to Medicines in Kenya."

The research found that TRIPS Plus provisions—such as market exclusivity and patent linkage—can delay the entry of affordable generic medicines, increase treatment costs, weaken local pharmaceutical production, and limit access to life-saving medicines, particularly for people living with HIV and those affected by TB.

The study calls for stronger public health safeguards in trade negotiations, greater transparency, and full use of TRIPS flexibilities to protect Kenya's constitutional right to health and advance Universal Health Coverage.

We urge:
✅ Governments in excluded countries, including Brazil, to use TRIPS flexibilities, including compulsory licensing and patent oppositions—to challenge unaffordable pricing.
✅ Generic manufacturers to produce Alimatravir without requiring Merck's permission.

New analysis from the University of Liverpool shows Alimatravir could be produced for just US$3 per person per year.

As the @KELINKenya delegation continues engaging in sessions at the International AIDS Conference, one message continues to stand out: equity is essential to reaching the last mile.

Across discussions with governments, communities, and partners, we've heard a common call to rethink how we finance and deliver health programmes. Life-saving innovations can only make a difference if they are consistently available to the people who need them. Interrupted supply chains mean interrupted treatment, lost momentum, and lives at risk.

Building on the conference theme of Rebuild. Rethink. Rise., we must strengthen inclusive health systems, rethink sustainable financing, and ensure no one is left behind.
