/1. In 1712, on the banks of the James River in Virginia, a speech was allegedly delivered by a slave owner named William Lynch, which is said to have inspired the popular “Willie Lynch Letter” (titled The Making of a Slave).
What did he say?
In the letter, the he tells other slave owners that he has discovered a secret method for controlling Black slaves: setting them against one another. He mentions that, among all the methods he uses, fear, distrust, and envy are the major tools for maintaining control.
