Most people think a good flyer comes from talent. In my experience, it comes from how you set up your Workplace before you design anything.
Swipe through the 4 slides to see one of my designs go from a blank white square to the finished flyer. Here is what happens at each stage, and the Photoshop lesson behind it.
Slide 1: The blank canvas
Before anything else, I create the document at the right size and resolution. For social media I use a square or 4:5 canvas at 72 to 150 PPI. For print, it must be 300 PPI. If you start too small and enlarge later, the design will blur and no amount of sharpening will truly fix it. Setting this up properly takes 30 seconds and saves hours.
Slide 2: Placing the main elements
This is where I bring in the key images and place them on the canvas. One habit that changed my work: I always convert images to Smart Objects before resizing them. A Smart Object lets you scale an image down and back up without losing quality, because Photoshop keeps the original data. If you resize a normal layer a few times, it gets blurry permanently.
Slide 3: Building the layout
Now the structure comes together. I use guides and a grid to align everything, and I name and group my layers as I go (Header, Images, Text, Footer). It looks like extra work, but when a client says “move this up” or “change that colour” two days later, I can fix it in a minute instead of searching through 80 layers called “Layer 47 copy.”
Slide 4: The finished design
Last come the colours, headline, logo and call to action. I stick to a small palette, here blue and white, because limiting your colours makes a design look clean and professional. Then I check one thing: if someone looks at this for 3 seconds, do they know what it is about and what to do next? If not, I simplify.
The real lesson: good design is not magic. It is a set of small, boring habits done in the right order. Right resolution, Smart Objects, a clean layer structure and a limited palette will improve your work more than any fancy effect.
Designers, what is one Photoshop habit you wish you had learned earlier? Everyone else, which slide is your favourite?

Recently, I learnt that you can offend a lady and she won't necessarily confront you about it. She might continue talking to you, get close to you, and even maintain a normal friendship with you.
Then, out of nowhere, something triggers the memory of what you did, and she decides it's time to get even, regardless of how long ago the incident happened. 😭
Dear guys, be careful out there. Some wounds apparently have no expiry date.
I'm not being sexist, but this is an observation that has left me wondering. Maybe this is part of why female friendships can sometimes be complicated too. 😭
