BREAKING: Ghana’s President Issues Stark Warning at UN “Africa Will Not Remain a Passive Arena for a New Scramble for Resources”

In a fiery address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama delivered a direct challenge to global powers, declaring that Africa will no longer tolerate colonial-style exploitation of its critical minerals.

Standing before world leaders, Mahama issued a clear warning:

> “Let me warn: Africa will not remain a passive arena for a new scramble for resources. Critical mineral extraction in Africa must not replicate the colonial era exploitation. We will process our minerals at home. We will build local industries that create dignified jobs for our youth, and we retain the value of our natural resources in Africa.”

The statement comes as demand for lithium, cobalt, copper and other minerals essential for the global green energy transition continues to surge. Mahama stressed that Africa home to vast deposits of these resources and the world’s youngest population will insist on domestic processing, local industrialisation, and the retention of value on the continent rather than exporting raw materials for refining elsewhere.

The Ghanaian leader linked the issue to broader demands for economic justice, noting that Africa seeks “equal partnership anchored in mutual respect,” not charity. He pointed to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose secretariat is hosted in Ghana, as a key vehicle for driving intra-African trade and industrial growth.

Mahama’s remarks form part of a wider speech in which he called for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, reform of the global financial architecture, and recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.

The warning is already circulating widely across African media and social platforms as one of the most forceful statements yet by a sitting African president against a potential new era of resource extraction on unequal terms.
