@dog85569@vickihird@mattwridley It IS more complex than just badgers
Nature always is
But the 5x increase or so in badger population of E&W between 1986 & 2016 HAS played its part
@EscapeLow@bmj_latest a) LCHF diets alone have been shown to deliver similar weight loss to GLP-1 drugs at less risk
b) Silly argument about averages when the average itself has shifted hugely
@renewablesmiffy@BjornLomborg But the fact wind turbines cannot meet baseload, because they sometimes generate little or nothing, also “makes THEM useless” by that reasoning 🤷🏻♂️
Doesn’t it?
@renewablesmiffy@BjornLomborg Gas power stations need to run constantly to be most efficient, meeting base load. Just using them to fill the gap when wind fails greatly increases their unit cost
After four years, LEGUMINOSE is coming to an end 🌱
Across 189 Living Labs and research fields, we explored how cereal-legume intercropping can support more productive, resilient and sustainable farming.

NESO is playing with fire.
Disconnected leadership and optimistic modelling are putting Britain’s electricity security at risk. New analysis of frequency data, the Eversheds report, and the Winter Outlook. A thread 🧵(1/12)
@sunny_hundal@FUDdaily@KathrynPorter26 But Sunny, that North/South transmission inadequacy only occurs because we’ve allowed wind power that’s largely in the North to replace fossil fuel generation that was distributed across the country 🤷🏻♂️
“We could amend this Bill here, there and everywhere, carve out this, tweak that, but at the end of the day the government would still be passing a Bill that says there’s one area, and one area only, of medical practice where you could get prosecuted if you put a foot wrong. That won’t be a chilling effect, that’ll be a deep freeze”
Magnificent from @Jebadoo2 #BinTheBill
But what do the Wildlife Trusts know about sustainable upland farming?
I mean it, what do they actually know about making upland farms sustainable in the widest sense of the word?
I’m yet to see an NGO/GO do this… they nearly always get mission creep and get rid of farmers
@StillRosieWood@herdyshepherd1@WildlifeTrusts You’ve not heard of the @NFFNUK then?
What are WE doing if not lobbying for farming in a nature-friendly way?
Scotland’s’ sustainable farm off the year’ is an upland sheep farm, proving sheep can ENHANCE uplands
For the first time, a golden eagle has fledged from a new nest on managed grouse moor in southern Scotland.
The gamekeepers on that moor have named him Beaky Junior.
The charity Restoring Upland Nature (RUN) asked them to choose the name in recognition of their part in helping golden eagles thrive in the area. They have kept their identities private to protect the nest.
His parents, Beaky and Skan, were both moved south from the Highlands by the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project, Beaky in 2018 and Skan in 2019.
RUN's chief executive, Dr Cat Barlow, says the support of landowners and gamekeepers has been "absolutely vital" to the recovery. That support runs from the Highland estates where young eagles were collected to the gamekeepers who monitor and protect nests in the south.
Golden eagles now hold 18 active ranges across southern Scotland. When the project began there were three nesting pairs.

China wants to depend less on the world for its food. But is 🇬🇧 farming becoming more dependent on China?
From grain & meat to farm tech & crop science, part two of my @FarmersWeekly investigation follows the connections, and asks what’s at stake 👇🏼

@herdyshepherd1@mattfle02898557 I recently heard about the book Bluffocracy by James Ball and Andrew Greenway from 2018
It sums up our political class these days:

A rant about LDL, HDL & cholesterol...
LDL stands for low density lipoprotein.
HDL stands for high density lipoprotein.
Think of these as taxis that transport lipids around the blood. (There are other taxis).
LDL-C is the cholesterol in a LDL.
HDL-C is the cholesterol in a HDL.
Both LDL & HDL (taxis) also carry protein, phospholipids and triglycerides.
People use LDL/LDL-C and HDL/HDL-C interchangeably, which is wrong and misleading.
LDL is called bad cholesterol. It's not even cholesterol; it's a carrier of cholesterol (and other lipids).
HDL is called good cholesterol. It's not even cholesterol; it's a carrier of cholesterol (and other lipids).
The cholesterol in a LDL is the same as the cholesterol in a HDL (C27H46O). There is no good or bad cholesterol - except in the heads of people who should know better (academics, doctors etc).
One thing we can all agree on is that lowering cholesterol is eye-wateringly lucrative.
