Asked if he is a racist, the Prime Minister said it was “hard to conclude that he’s anything other than someone who has racist views,” then called his actions “the worst kind of hateful behaviour.”

That is not governing. That is the head of government trying the defendant on television.

You can think the Channel stunt was reckless. You can think masked intimidation on the street is unacceptable.

None of that gives No. 10 the right to pre-load a jury with a label before the evidence is heard.

A fair trial means the state proves the charge in court, not on a Sunday sofa. If the case is strong, prosecute it.

If it isn’t, a Prime Minister’s verdict doesn’t fix it. It just makes the trial dirtier.
