In the context of Norse #blót rituals is mentioned in historical texts and may be interpreted from archaeological findings. Such practices likely occurred and could have involved prisoners or slaves, as well as high-ranking individuals.

Kings were held accountable for both good and bad years, thus could be sacrificed in dire times. The Ynglinga saga recounts how King Domalde was sacrificed for good harvests, and King Olav Tretelgja for causing famine.

An account from the Jomsvikinga saga tells of Earl Håkon offering his son to the gods for victory. These narratives, supported by Adam of Bremen's writings on the Uppsala blót, suggest that both animals and humans were sacrificed, sometimes by hanging in a sacred grove.
