What helps: Intergenerational conversations, reconnecting us with what nature used to be. Direct experiences with nature that sharpen our awareness of change. Remembering the past is the first step to restoring the future. #nature#environment#awareness#nativeplants
The biggest crisis is not immigration or pot holes, not left or right, itโs the tragic decline in biodiversity and wildlife loss. Yet people ignore it as we become human obsessed forgetting that nature is the source of all our resources.
If you never saw that version, you donโt feel the loss โ and that quiet forgetting becomes the new baseline. Over time, we start accepting degraded ecosystems as normal.
Each generation grows up with a more depleted environment and calls it โnormal,โ because itโs all theyโve ever known. Think about walking through a park and thinking, โThis seems healthy.โ But maybe 30 years ago that same park had twice as many birds, wildflowers, or insects.
Monitored vertebrate populations, mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, have fallen by 73% on average from 1970 to 2020. Freshwater species are down 85%. Shifting baseline syndrome (SBS) is what happens when we forget how vibrant the natural world used to be.
A dogs dinner of a 'wild flower verge' managed by @TfL has not been cut for two years and is scrubbing over. A21 near Orpington. Some have been cut all through the summer and some never. Paying lip service or what? @MarkCocker2 They don't know what they are doing! #biodiversity
@TfL It has been cut in the last 24hrs, in spring. As has the one in the picture. See the sign? It says Wild Flower verge. Cut in the spring? WTF? A "responsible authority" Ignorant twits! @MarkCocker2 It's maddening that this mismanagement is allowed.
@TfL MOWING WILD FLOWER VERGES - NOW? WTF? You really should give some thought to how you make yourselves look stupid! @MarkCocker2#biodiversity#bromley
Dilemma! I always go for the underdog but I am a @OfficialBHAFC supporter! Added to that if Palace win the cup it makes it harder for @OfficialBHAFC to get a European place ๐ซค
@TfL is it worth employing someone that knows what they are doing when you designate 'wildflower verges'? Your management along the A21 in the Bromley area is nothing short of disgraceful. #biodiversity@MarkCocker2
@TfL has a novel way of managing #wildflower verges. They put really expensive signs up saying 'Wild Flower Verge' and then mow them. Twice this year already and it's only February! @MarkCocker2 Biodiversity is doomed with this mad behaviour
