HOW TO BEHAVE AS A DOCTOR WHEN TOU CALL YOUR COLLEAGUES BACK HOME TREATING YOUR RELATIVE.
Introduce yourself by first name and let them know you’re a doctor but you’re practicing abroad.
Thank them for their help so far in treating your relative.
Calmly try to know the Drs level (HO, Reg or consultant & their specialty).
Ask about care given so far, possible diagnosis, their thoughts on response to treatment & plan going forward.
Discuss with them as a team and make suggestions within the limits of what is feasible. Don’t ask why a health centre hasn’t done a CTPA for PE.
Maybe your hospital didn’t even have X-ray before you relocated last month.
Ofcourse some might be defensive and unnecessarily difficult, it’s not their fault. The system back home is hard.
Don’t be shy to ask for transfer or referral to a better centre if care given is grossly inadequate.
Share some banter if need be. Commend them for doing so much with so little.
Respect your colleagues back home. They’re professionals like you and always remember it’s that same system that trained you to become GMC certified.
