That’s the kind of statement that sounds nice on TV but ignores basic economics.

Tariffs on Canada aren’t about “making life expensive” they’re about leveling the playing field when Canadian industries are heavily subsidized by their government and undercut American producers. If the U.S. removes tariffs while Canada keeps theirs or keeps dumping subsidized goods into our markets, that’s not “free and fair trade” it’s one-sided trade that kills U.S. jobs.

Remember:

Canadian dairy, lumber, and steel all benefit from federal subsidies and protectionist policies. Tariffs are how the U.S. counters that imbalance.

Every country protects its own economy. Canada does it openly so pretending the U.S. shouldn’t is naïve or dishonest.

Short-term price changes don’t outweigh long-term economic independence. Cheap goods mean nothing if domestic industries collapse and Americans lose their livelihoods.

So no, these tariffs aren’t “hurting families” they’re defending the American workforce from being priced out by foreign subsidies. What really makes life expensive is outsourcing jobs and depending on other countries for what we can produce right here at home.
