I see that Greggs has taken over the shop on the corner of Cranbrook Road & Balfour.

It gives me an opportunity to post this wonderful picture in an auction catalogue from 1896 which was selling off plots on the Ilford Lodge Estate. Note the lack of shops further down Cranbrook!

A piece of the Art Deco era still stands on the eastern fringe of Ilford High Road. Home to electrical retailer RGB, most of its life was as a car showroom. On Sunday we'll return to its motoring days and thank @mod_in_metro for the excellent history on this special building

Traffic once flowed north, south, east and west through Ilford Broadway and until the mid-80s Ilford Lane commenced there. In Episode #104 we'll return to its traditional layout and remember a unique set of buildings which Ilford has never come near replacing.

@IlfordRetro From the 1931 Kelly's you can see they were still houses or medical practices as yet not converted to commercial enterprises like the ones the other side of Beal Road.

That wasn't for long and by the mid-30s I think they were no longer private houses.

@IlfordRetro The Victorian houses, the upper storeys of which can still be seen, were all built on the Grange Estate by companies sub-contracted by A. Cameron Corbett. These, down to where Cranbrook College was originally, were known as 7-13 Cranbrook Gardens, then 72-84 Cranbrook Road.

Until fairly recently, the spread of a varied set of businesses across the town centre was far and wide. Retail has gravitated towards the High Road and Exchange since its opening in 1991 but on Sunday we'll remember when clothes shops and jewellers traded on Cranbrook Road...
