Oh hell, I guess there's nothing left to do but to move over to @ilvestoomas.bsky.social. It seems civilised there. Hope it lasts.
Will be double posting for awhile weaning myself off this hellsite.
Elon Musk, Trump's largest financial backer, threatens US elected officials against launching investigations into Starlink/Ukraine sabotage, federal contracts, DOGE actions, and other potentially criminal issues.
"Live by the sword, die by the sword," the billionaire said.
Browder: I'm sure every Russian oligarch is thinking about overthrowing Putin in the privacy of their own kitchen. None of them talks about it, because Putin arrests, kills or impoverishes the disloyal.
They are the least likely to act, as they have the most to lose. 1/
The Patriots for Moscow— sorry, Patriots for Europe, who were supposed to become a “significant right-wing force” in the European Parliament, welcomed former Czech Communist Party leader Kateřina Konečná into their ranks.
Her own reason for joining: her coalition’s programme overlaps most with theirs.
When “against Brussels” and “for Moscow” becomes the only ideology, left and right end up in the same group. That is not patriotism. It is the convergence of extremes around a shared contempt of a united Europe.
For Ave Europa, Europeans and their sovereignty come first, now and always.

Browder: Putin would very much like Marine Le Pen to win in France, and helping her stir up discontent is a lot cheaper for him than sending even one day's worth of missiles into Ukraine.
Fomenting unrest is standard operating procedure for Russia's GRU and FSB.
The Trump Administration is now buying Russian diesel and giving sanctions relief while restricting Ukraine's ability to intercept drones, and reportedly withholding air defense missiles from Kyiv.
All while Russia supplies Iran with intelligence used to attack American troops.
Trump's war with Iran is driving up costs for American families, while his administration sends your taxpayer dollars to an adversary targeting our servicemembers.
It's indefensible.
Elon Musk’s reported order to restrict Starlink service stripped Ukraine of critical defenses while Russia rains down missiles and drones on civilians. Congress should exercise our authority to investigate Musk’s reported decision and any White House involvement, compel testimony, and hold those responsible accountable. We must stand with Ukraine as it defends its people and its democracy from Putin’s aggression.

The U.S. military has quietly been scaling back its troop presence at bases across the Middle East in recent days, and the State Department is ordering a further reduction in staff at multiple diplomatic posts in the region, according to two U.S. officials and two people familiar with the matter.

Reports indicate that China fed Iran satellite imagery to help target a U.S. base in Jordan and Russia did the same ahead of a strike in Saudi Arabia.
@RHFontaine and @AKendallTaylor look at how Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are learning to make their network work, without ever fighting each other’s wars https://t.co/XqaMvAATGx
This, by @CathyYoung63, is the piece on the intellectual travesty that was Rubio's Athens speech on Western Civilisation.
Reading that speech I found myself wondering what civilisation is this. There's no Enlightenment -- no Locke, no Montesquieu. US Cato and Cicero-loving Founding Fathers, as Young points out, abhored Julius Caesar and his destruction of the Roman Republic.
A completely bizarre take on the development of Western civilisation and its impact on the US.
BREAKING: France has revealed today that unauthorized drones flew over several sensitive military sites, including the Toulon naval base, during a military exercise in October.
The overflights took place between October 9 and 13, disrupting Exercise Typhoon, which ran from October 5 to 16 in the Toulon area, according to ICI Provence.
The drones were spotted over the naval base, the headquarters of the Directorate General of Armaments in Toulon, and the 54th Artillery Regiment in Hyères. The Toulon naval base is one of France’s most important military installations, serving as the main home port for its Mediterranean fleet and hosting the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
Despite the use of advanced electromagnetic jamming systems, none of the drones could be recovered. Their exact number and models remain unknown, although a source told ICI Provence that several large drones were spotted during each incident.
A judicial investigation has been opened under the authority of the Toulon public prosecutor’s office to identify those responsible and establish their motives.
The overflights occurred in restricted airspace where flights are prohibited to protect sensitive military installations.
