"Beat the market" is the most expensive idea ever sold to retail investors.
I've spent 10 years investing in US and Hong Kong stocks. I chased alpha myself, and watched smart people around me do the same, year after year. Most fell short — not because they weren't smart, but because the math rarely works in our favor:
📉 After fees, the average active investor trails the index. 📈 Risk premia, proven factors, global diversification — that's where returns have historically lived.
One disclosure before anything else: I founded @Waterdrop_inc, and its Hong Kong subsidiary holds insurance brokerage and fund-related licenses. Over the years, we've watched plenty of peers package and sell "alpha" exactly this way — that's a big part of why I stopped buying it.
So I'm building my own portfolio around a few simple rules: ✓ No alpha chasing. ✓ Clear risk. Low turnover. ✓ Proven factors, globally diversified. ✓ No return promises — licensed or not, honest investors don't make them.
And I'm seriously considering turning these rules into an actual fund — low cost, factor-based, globally diversified. If you've ever wished a fund like this existed, I'd love to hear what you'd want in it (and what would make you walk away).
