On this day in 1919, British troops surrounded #JallianwalaBagh, where a large crowd had gathered during the annual Baisakhi fair to protest against the #RowlattAct and the arrest of pro-independence activists Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal. The garden had only one narrow exit, as the other three sides were enclosed by buildings. After blocking the exit, Brigadier General #REHDyer ordered his troops to open fire on the unarmed crowd. Official British records reported around 379 people killed and over 1,200 injured, though Indian estimates suggest that over 1,000 may have been killed.
