Detecting newly settled seafan colonies is not easy. It requires a careful fingertip search by divers. This is an image from our study looking at seaman (Eunicella verrucosa) population dynamics in Lyme Bay almost 20 years ago. #lymebay#pinkseafans#eunicellaverrucosa
The copperband butterflyfish, aka beaked coralfish, is one of the prettiest of butterflyfish IMO. They are monogamous, pairing for life, so are often seen together like this. Their long forceps-like mouth is an adaptation for capturing prey in crevices. #butterflyfish#reeflife
A while since I've posted anything, so here's a pic of of species that get less attention than deserve. These are soft corals, or octocorals. The whip corals here belong to genus Junceella, prob J. fragilis. Read more on my blog https://t.co/ZhAIPCKorf #phiphiisland#octocorals
@LymeBayReserve@PlymUni @ColinDMunro For photos I use @colinmunrophoto - handle listed is inactive. Nice to see my pic of Saw-tooth Ledges being used, one of the few areas LB where good communities of fragile epibenthic species survived, so protection essential. Lyme Bay is a special place. Very, interesting quote.
The needs of local fishermen, whether it be Lyme Bay, Senegal or the South Pacific, have to be part of any workable marine conservation plan #lymebay#marineconservation
There is a delicate balance between the need to feed people and the need to protect our seas for future generations; the need to protect jobs now and the need ensure fishing is sustainable and there are jobs for the next generation. #lymebay#lymebayclosedarea#artisanalfisheries
@ProfRachelGaN@Andrew_Adonis Unfortunately there is an elementary error in your last tweet prof. It may well be that lecturers are working harder. That does not equate to better, or equal, tuition delivered. Students are not paying for your hard work, they are paying for education delivered.
1. Liam Fox story almost certainly dead cat
2. No proof Russia hacked NHS documents, only accusations of similarity
3. Headlines labelling documents Russian hacked are misleading
4. NHS is on table in US/UK trade deal
5. Your NHS
If these predictions are even partially correct, then the knock on effects will be severe, and not just for those directly dependent on tropical fisheries. https://t.co/16fd3wzS1w
The pycnogonid (sea spider) Pycnogonum litorale feeding on the body fluids of a beadlet anemone (Actinia equinus). This is an old photograph of mine, taken maybe 15 or 16 years ago on film. I've just added this picture to my macro collection at https://t.co/6UthhdfNal #seaspiders
Worldwide artisanal fisheries are under pressure: overcapacity + impacts of big commercial boats from overseas. It's hard, often dangerous work. Some years ago I spend time with pirouge fishermen in Senegal. You can read https://t.co/z2wzntFcKc #artisanalfisheries#senegal
Not everyone is observing social distancing. On a small beach in Phuket, Southern Thailand, as the tide falls, so tens of thousands of fiddler crabs emerge, to feed, to joust for territory, and maybe to find a mate. #nikonasia#nikonthailand#macrophotography
Some things in nature are truly spectacular. Northern gannets take to the air simultaneously. St Kilda, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The northern gannet, Morus bassanus, is the largest gannet species, and also the largest seabird in Europe. #gannets#scottishwildlife#StKilda
