We conduct scientific research on all things migration. The Immigration Lab is directed by Dr. Ernesto Castañeda @DrErnestoCast at American University in DC.
The wordplay fuses people's desire for hidden knowledge, conspirancies, and pop culture with anti-immigrant sentiment, said Ernesto Castañeda, director of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University.
"Ultimately, integration and acculturation for immigrants are not determined by race or native language, but rather by processes that unfold over time, Castañeda said.
“I have researched the immigration process for over 20 years, as have dozens of colleagues,” he added. “We know that work permits, access to education, and opportunities are what enable rapid acceleration, not someone’s skin color or country of birth.”
"Scientists and international students, no matter their place of birth or religion, have proven “a high likelihood of rapid assimilation,” but the Trump administration has made it harder for them to prove their merit in the United States."

The Trump administration has deported 21,000 immigrants to places that the US State Department calls too dangerous for Americans to visit. The overwhelming majority of those deported had no criminal convictions, and at least 600 were children. https://t.co/VLmLiJQT8G
Hondurans have been at the heart of some of the most visible migration phenomena in the last few years, as well as the direct target of anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy. In Leave If You Can, Amelia Frank-Vitale offers a detailed portrait of the Honduran exodus and what it reveals about the broader consequences of changing US border enforcement policies. She highlights the stories of those who are often presented as unsympathetic: deported young men implicitly associated with the very violence they are trying to flee. In the process, she challenges underlying assumptions frequently held by policy makers and humanitarian agencies. In this talk, Frank-Vitale gives an overview of the book and details the field work in Honduras and Mexico that helped informed her writing. This is followed by comments by Professor Ulla D. Berg of Rutgers University and Dr. Ernesto Castañeda of American University. Tune in.

"The Americans moving overseas in search of a better life: Every 4 years, Americans joke about leaving the US if their preferred presidential candidate loses. For some, there is a genuine exit plan. More often than not, it’s not about politics but about exploring options."

America University’s Castañeda said he’s not surprised to see the administration go after immigrants for whom they already have identifying information, such as names and addresses. “DACA is very easy because everybody has to, by definition, register.”
And the pool of easily deportable immigrants might grow further still.
“Really, nobody is safe from deportation in this administration — particularly if they are from Latin America or Africa,” said Ernesto Castañeda, director of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies and the Immigration Lab at American University. “Kids are disappearing from classrooms.”

The Immigration Lab's new book, "Global Pathways to Becoming New Americans" is out! This is the most in-depth look at some of the people who came escaping conflict and seeking asylum mainly from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Latin America & the Caribbean since the pandemic. More about this on the works.
The artist behind this painting, Criselda Vasquez, painted this portrait of her parents in 2017. The man in this painting, her father, was recently taken by ICE. He has lived in the United States for forty years. This loss has made it hard for the family to support themselves. If you want to support them, you can go to their GoFundMe here:

Monstrous behavior by ICE and Alabama police, who blamed a Honduran mother for "abandoning" her child when they arrested & deported her without him. The son, Orlin, a US citizen, was then murdered by abusive relative and Trump admin wont let her return to bury him. Nightmarish.
OUTRAGEOUS. The husband of this US citizen did literally nothing wrong. He submitted his renewal to @USCIS five months before his status was set to expire. Then the government just sat on his paperwork and did nothing, and his protections expired.
