A striking image captured by the Dark Energy Camera showing galaxies within the Fornax Cluster—the second-largest galaxy cluster in the vicinity of the Milky Way.

Dominating the center of the image are the elliptical galaxies NGC 1399 and NGC 1404, which consist primarily of old stars. In the lower right, the irregular galaxy NGC 1427A is visible; it bears a resemblance to the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is moving toward the cluster's center at a speed of approximately 610 km/s. This rapid movement will ultimately lead to the galaxy's destruction, as it is torn apart by the gravitational pull of other cluster members.
A number of background objects are also visible. Some are stars from our own Milky Way (identifiable by their diffraction spikes), while others are more distant galaxies. Upon closer inspection, one can see that some of the background points exhibit a spiral structure.
