Itโs the season of Physiciansโ Week all over Nigeria.
Thereโs an activity near you. Join them. Tell us. Tag us!
Happy Physiciansโ week to our Hippocratic Brethren across the country.
At the kickoff of the ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ค ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ today, I was honored to join distinguished members of the National Assembly, including the Rt Honorable Speaker, Dr. Tajuddeen Abbas @speaker_abbas, represented by the Chief Whip, my brother Hon. Bello Kumo @KumoUsmanBello; Chairman, House Committee on Budget and Appropriations, Hon. Abubakar Bichi; Chair, House Committee on Health Institutions, Hon. Amos Gwamna; Hon. Austin Achado; Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, DG, National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment @NicratGov; members of the Federal Ministry of Health @Fmohnigeria; development partners CSOs; private sector leaders; health workers; cancer survivors; and all those united in our mission to tackle cancer in Nigeria.
This yearโs theme, โ๐๐๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ: ๐๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐๐๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ,โ reflects our shared commitment to confront the rapid growth of cancer and to adopt a forward-thinking, collaborative approach.
I extend my profound gratitude to the LOC for orchestrating this commemorative event. It symbolizes our collective determination to drive change, acknowledging both the survivors whose resilience inspires us and the healthcare workers dedicated to improving cancer care in our nation. From oncologists and nurses to pharmacists and radiotherapists, each of you plays a vital role in not only treating but also providing hope to those affected by this disease.
Under HE President Tinubuโs @officialABAT visionary leadership, our administration has placed population health at the heart of the #RenewedHope Agenda. As NCDs, such as cancer, continue to escalate, we recognize the urgency to act now. The burden is growing swiftly, and with limited resources, infrastructure, and personnel, we must prioritize both prevention and early intervention.
Todayโs observance of the first National Health Promotion Day aligns seamlessly with our ongoing efforts under the #NHSRII to improve population health and establish a cohesive national response. These frameworks emphasize collaboration with States, Development partners, and other stakeholders to address critical health challenges, including cancer, and to build a robust health system.
Our approach spans preventive measures, such as the Hepatitis B birth dose for liver cancer and HPV vaccines for cervical cancerโa campaign that has led to one of the worldโs highest coverage rates among girls in Nigeria. Alongside this, weโre expanding access to screeningsโmammography, colonoscopy, PSA for prostate cancerโto ensure that detection occurs early, when chances of survival are highest. Importantly, President Tinubu has approved the commissioning of six major cancer infrastructure projects, with the first two expected to be operational by May 2025, as well as expanding diagnostic centers and training the oncology workforce.
Thanks to these efforts, cancer is no longer a death sentence for everyone. Advances in genomics, precision medicine, and innovative treatments bring us closer to transforming cancer care. Our goal is to build an environment where all Nigerians are empowered to take proactive steps: get screened, seek treatment, and find support.
To further this vision, I call on the National Assembly @nassnigeria to continue its invaluable investment in cancer infrastructure, equipment, and human resources. Additionally, establishing a #CatastrophicHealthFund to support cancer care is essential to prevent families from slipping into poverty due to costly treatments. This Fund would provide critical financial protection for Nigerians, particularly as cancer treatments are among the most financially devastating.
Together, with determination, compassion, and a commitment to innovation, we will address the cancer challenge and build a healthier future for all Nigerians. Thank you.

Congratulations to @DrZSB on being elected as the President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Your dedication to cancer control and advocacy has truly made a difference,Wishing you every success in this new role
Today, at Redeemerโs University @RedeemersUni, Ede, Osun State, I was glad to commission the new Institute of Genomics and Global Health, marking a significant evolution from ACEGIDโs @acegid status as a center of excellence. This moment is not only a proud achievement for all those involved, but it also stands as a powerful symbol of what African scientific leadership can achieve on the global stage. Under the visionary leadership of Prof Christian Happi @christian_happi, the team at ACEGID has made extraordinary strides in genomic research, particularly in addressing some of the most pressing infectious disease challenges of our time.
The inauguration of the Institute reminds us that the work being done by the ACEGID team is a global public good, benefiting not only Nigeria and Africa but also contributing to global health security. The partnerships fostered between institutions and scientists from the Global North and South are a testament to our shared commitment to protecting and advancing human health. This collaboration has demonstrated what is possible when we work together to confront challenges that affect us all.
Under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, @officialABAT health security remains a central pillar of our broader strategy to transform Nigeriaโs health system, unlock the value chain, and improve population health outcomes. This is why supporting cutting-edge scientific research, like the work at this Institute, is essential. We need to create a health system environment with strong public health capabilities to withstand the potential and evolving threats posed by infectious diseases and the ongoing impacts of climate change.
The pace at which new health threats are emerging is accelerating, and with it, the need for robust scientific responses. The innovations in genomics we are witnessing at ACEGID provide a glimmer of hope, offering us the tools we need to be better prepared for what may come. The Federal Government of Nigeria @NigeriaGov is fully committed to supporting these efforts, knowing that science must lead the way in securing a healthier future for all.

NMA DELEGATION MEETS WITH MINISTER OF HEALTH, SUBMITS REQUEST FOR REVIEW OF CONMESS SALARY STRUCTURE
On Tuesday, 10th September 2024, the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr (Prof) Bala Audu, led a high-level delegation to meet with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate. The delegation included members of the National Officersโ Committee (NOC), Past Presidents, NMA FCT leadership, and representatives from affiliate bodies. The Honourable Minister was meeting with the NMA delegation on behalf of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, who was unavoidably indisposed.
During the meeting, Dr Bala Audu presented key concerns, including the urgent need for a review of the CONMESS salary structure in light of the current economic realities. He also emphasized the importance of intensified efforts to secure the release of doctors currently held by kidnappers, amongst other issues.
In his response, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Governmentโs commitment to prioritizing the welfare of healthcare workers, as part of its ongoing efforts to address brain drain in the sector, while highlighting key aspects of the newly unveiled Federal Government policy to retain medical experts within Nigeria.
He also assured the delegation that the ministry is working diligently to ensure the prompt payment of outstanding CONMESS arrears, and also open to discuss the review of the salary structure.
The Minister restated the collaborative efforts with relevant agencies to ensure the release of doctors currently in captivity.
Dr Mannir Bature
National Publicity Secretary
We visited His Highness, the Emir of Misau, at his palace to express our sympathy for the victims of the devastating floods in Misau and Dambam LGAs. I also had the privilege of meeting with His Highness, the Emir of Katagum, the Emir of Jamaare, and the Sarkin Gamawa to address the situation in the affected areas, particularly in Gamawa.
On behalf of the Chigari Foundation @chigari_ngo, in partnership with well-wishers and the Nigerian Medical Association @nationalnma, we launched medical outreach services for thousands of citizens displaced by the floods, along with token contributions to support their immediate needs.
The floods we are witnessing in Nigeria, along with other impacts of climate change, are severely disrupting our food systems and ecology, leading to both acute and chronic malnutrition and the spread of waterborne diseases.
We hope that nations responsible for driving carbon emissions will recognize the need for justice and support our communities in adapting to these new global realities. The centuries-old resilience of our communities is being severely tested by the consequences of man-made global warming.
People often ask me, why cancer? Itโs simple. There is no disease that destroys, debilitates, disenfranchises, as cancer does. It doesnโt affect just individuals, it affects the entire family, community and country.
I never think of stopping, and even in the face of adversity, I keep going. And I will keep goingโฆ.As a grassroots advocate, as a speaker at high level meetings, as board room member, as a care giver, as a fundraiser and in all the ways my being can muster.
Being nominated again to the position of president elect of @uicc is great. To me it is not a position. Leadership is a practice that allows us achieve our purpose.
Thank you sir, @DrTunjiAlausa, our Hon Minister of health. Not just for this announcement, but for your support, encouragement and interventions to me, and the entire cancer structure in Nigeria and beyond. #wemoveagain
