Team Seal are working though some exciting results from the project. Have a look for yourself at our shiny new (but still being edited!) website https://t.co/lcj4ryQmjJ
@MedievalMJJ Looks more like a really fancy notary sign. Seals are really more about the impression than the matrix (or at least the one implies the other).
Practicalities of sealing show many impressions made while supported at the base of the palm as the sigillant supported the document - act is highly visible and performative @Imprint_Project
@Imprint_Project findings suggest corporate sealer might be in place in Hereford Cathedral chancery. In Exeter, however, a larger chancery, sealers were more individual & often for validation the mayoralty seal was used. There is no uniform sealing process in cathedral chapters.
There's still time to register for "Keeping in touch with Medieval Sigillants" in the Great Hall on 31st Oct, where we will be finding out what the @Imprint_Project (which uses forensics to investigate medieval seals) has revealed. Please join us! https://t.co/Ogl6S1PPKE
