Clarification:
A report published on November 19 in Pakistan-based Daily Express Tribune falsely quotes me as saying that “[Dr. Mahrang] Baloch has been held in Hudda District Prison under reportedly harsh conditions,” and further claims that “Her sister said she appeared ‘weak and stressed’ and was denied access to legal counsel.”
I have never spoken to this reporter, nor have I said Mahrang Baloch appeared weak and stressed. This is a complete misquote.
I want to clarify that Dr. Mahrang Baloch is strong, high in her spirit, and committed in the face of state brutality.
I respectfully request the media: if you cannot accurately report on Dr. Mahrang Baloch’s case, then please refrain from misreporting it.

We are deeply concerned about the treatment of Dr. Mahrang Baloch and the detained BYC leadership, whose cases show how the judiciary in Balochistan has been paralysed under pressure. Ordinary political and civil matters are being turned into terrorism cases, with even routine Section 144 charges framed as acts of terrorism and sent to Anti-Terrorism Courts.
The Anti-Terrorism Court Quetta’s decision yesterday to deny bail in FIR 89/25 is especially alarming, as there is no evidence linking Dr. Mahrang Baloch or the BYC leadership to the incident at Quetta Civil Hospital or the removal of bodies from the mortuary. Adding to the irony, identical charges related to the same event have been filed in different districts of Balochistan. Several co-accused in this case have already been granted bail. Dr. Mahrang Baloch herself was granted bail in Mastung and Khuzdar, yet denied bail in Quetta. This treatment shows clear bias and a blatant misuse of the legal process to silence peaceful activists.
While we welcome the bail granted in several FIRs, the remaining baseless charges only underline the state’s attempt to punish those who speak out against enforced disappearances.
Our family will challenge this injustice in the High Court. We will face this tyranny and will not be silenced.

The arbitrary and unlawful inclusion of several Baloch activists and human rights defenders on the Fourth Schedule of Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997, represents an alarming attempt to suppress peaceful activism, silence legitimate dissent, and criminalize those who advocate for human rights, justice, and political rights.
Several BYC members and associated activists have been added to the Fourth Schedule without due process, transparency, or credible evidence. The individuals named include:
District Khuzdar: Dr. Sabhia Baloch (Central leader, BYC), Sammi Deen (Central leader, BYC), and local residents Shakil Ahmad, Abdul Ghani, Habib Ullah, Muhammad Tariq, and Shafiq-ur-Rehman Sasoli.
District Kech: Nazgul and Syed Bibi (both BYC activists), and Dr. Shalee, organizer of the Baloch Women Forum.
District Chagai: Twenty-six individuals — including 12 from Tehsil Dalbandin, 11 from Tehsil Nokkundi, and 3 from Tehsil Taftan — all of whom are peaceful human rights defenders, students, and community organizers.
The inclusion of these individuals on the Fourth Schedule is a gross violation of constitutional protections, particularly the rights to due process, freedom of association, and freedom of expression guaranteed by Pakistan’s Constitution and international human rights law. The misuse of counterterrorism legislation to target peaceful activists undermines the rule of law and further erodes trust between the state and the people of Balochistan.
The BYC calls upon the Government of Pakistan to immediately remove the names of those wrongfully listed on the Fourth Schedule and to end the practice of using counterterrorism laws as instruments of political repression.
We urge national and international human rights organizations, civil society groups, and the international community to take serious notice of these actions and to stand in solidarity with those whose only “offense” is speaking up for the rights and dignity of their people.

Pakistani Forces raided my house last night in Dasht, Kech, harassing my family & stealing valuables such as mobile phones of my brothers. This isn’t the first time that family has gone through this harassment and torture. 1/3
It has been nine long years since Zarena, the wife of Shabir Baloch, has lived in agony, not knowing whether her husband is alive or dead, healthy or suffering, near or far. This endless uncertainty is a cruelty that I can not define in words. Such collective punishment is not in violation of only law and justice but also the very essence of humanity and the teachings of Islam.
Bibi Zarena was a newlywed when her husband was forcibly disappeared. In a single moment, her dreams were shattered, and her life became an endless wait. For nine years, she has carried her pain with grace, not through anger, but through peaceful struggle, holding on to the hope that truth and justice will one day prevail.
Shabir’s sister Seema has carried not only Zarena’s grief but the burden of hundreds of families whose loved ones have disappeared. She has become a sister, a source of strength, and a caretaker for all those who break, who shatter, who lose hope, and she gives them hope again.
I once asked Seema, “What will you do if Shabir is released? Will you finally rest? Will you leave this struggle?”
She smiled softly and said,
If I do not die of happiness that day, I will still be here with all of you.

In an interview from prison, the Baloch activist Dr Mahrang Baloch offers her perspective on the future of political dissent in Pakistan. https://t.co/gFIO37UGUy

In a video message, Nadia Baloch, sister of BYC Central Organizer Dr. Mahrang Baloch, speaks out:
“My sister Dr. Mahrang Baloch and her companions were illegally detained on March 22 under the black law of 3MPO (Maintenance of Public Order).
Since then, we’ve knocked on every legal door, exhausted every lawful means to secure their release.
According to the law, their detention period ended on June 22. Bibarg Baloch’s was due to end on June 25. Under 3MPO, a Review Board including the Chief Justice and senior judges must convene, review their case, and personally hear them. But no such board was ever formed.
We repeatedly asked: on what legal grounds are they still imprisoned after June 22? The only response we received were baseless excuses that the ‘situation outside isn’t suitable,’ so they are being held for 15 more days. We challenged this, no individual has that authority. Only a formal Review Board can decide. Still, no official notification was provided. Our time was wasted.
We went to the jail and waited the entire day. When we insisted, they finally brought a document but strictly forbade us from copying or photographing it. We were shown nothing official. No Review Board ever met. This is a completely illegal act.
Under such lawlessness, even breathing has become unsafe. These black laws are suffocating us all.”
She appeals to lawyers, human rights organizations, the Baloch public, and all political voices of conscience: Rise. Speak. Act.
Raise your voice for the immediate release of BYC leadership.

Saira Baloch, sister of forcibly disappeared brothers Asif and Rasheed Baloch who were enforcedly disappeared by Pakistani forces and remains missing for the past seven years — speaks out in a video message:
“In Balochistan, serious human rights violations are unfolding every day. Our youth, students, elderly, even women and children are not spared. Such as, young girls like Mahjabeen Baloch have been forcibly disappeared by Pakistani forces. Her whereabouts remain unknown.
Extrajudicial killings have surged. Victims often return with signs of severe torture and some of those who get released don’t even survive due to the inhuman and barbarous torture inflicted inside torture cells.
Against this state barbarism, the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) stood firm. They raised awareness and spoke the truth. And now, BYC itself is under attack. Its leaders are in illegal detention.”
