@BirdQueens Just saw and heard Pileated Woodpecker on corner of 160th St and 11th Ave in beechhurst queens. Was working and unable to get documentation and couldn’t stay in area but this was about 20mins ago. Unmistakable
@BirdQueens Pretty excited that I THINK we just found both a Bairds Sandpiper and a white rumped Sandpiper at the Large puddle at Hecksher field 7. Both have wingtips that extend past tail and were larger than the least and semipalmated.
@BirdQueens Just posting this because of the monarch discussion - 89 emerged today and will be released…. They made me miss the phalaropes at JB but worth it ;) 9 hour day with them today! 😅
@SuizoEnDF@abigailinqueens@NYCParks@BirdQueens@mbfmonarchs@NYC_DOT Ive met with Andrew Chin from DOT in 2019 to no avail - I am planning on writing another proposal again this year as 2020 wasn't the year to get things done....but honestly not holding my breath. When they make the endangered species list things will HAVE TO change. But for now?
@SeanMcDonnell84 @NYCParks 🙏 If anyone would like to come any morning to see the outdoor enclosure with the eggs, caterpillars and chrysalis, just DM me - you're more than welcome. Its just hard to let a species on the verge of the endangered species list get mowed up week after week 😞.
@abigailinqueens@NYCParks@BirdQueens@mbfmonarchs HAHA and a few dozen IS amazing! If you ever need help collecting, etc just lmk. And feel free to come to Bellerose to Volunteer one morning! :) lol 6am start!
@abigailinqueens@NYCParks@BirdQueens@mbfmonarchs Thanks! It's' a lot of work but worth it. I Spend 7 hours a day over the summer doing it! 7 days a week. Today spent an extra hour in a mowed field with eggs all over milkweed that was only 1-2 inches tall because they are desperate for habitat.
@abigailinqueens@NYCParks@BirdQueens@mbfmonarchs They mow 2-3 times during their cycle here from July to September. Trimming the milkweed Is necessary to keeping it healthy and for the monarchs to lay BUT NOT MOWING it all down at random intervals.
