🎥 | Forest officials in #Sikkim have recorded the first documented video evidence of the Mishmi Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) in the Bakuchen area under Tingda Reserve Forest during a routine patrolling exercise conducted by the Forest and Environment Department.

According to officials from the Forest and Environment Department, Sikkim, the footage shows a herd of eight individuals, which is the largest group of takin recorded from this locality so far.

The Mishmi Takin is a large ungulate species often described as a goat-antelope. It is characterized by a stocky body, short legs, and a deep chest. The species has a long, shaggy coat that varies in colour from dark brown to golden or creamy white depending on subspecies and seasonal conditions. It also secretes an oily substance from its skin, which helps provide water resistance in cold and wet alpine environments.

The species is found across parts of the Eastern Himalayas and occurs at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 4,500 metres in forested valleys and alpine grasslands. The Mishmi Takin is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

In Sikkim, the Mishmi Takin represents the westernmost extent of its known global distribution. Historical records of the species in the state have been limited, and officials noted that the latest documentation is among the few confirmed records from the region in over 20 years.

The sighting was reported from Bakuchen under Tingda Reserve Forest, an area managed under the state’s forest conservation framework.

A Takin herd was spotted at Bakuchaang (~5 km below Tamzee) on 14 June afternoon by the personnels of Tourism & Forest Department of Sikkim.

Such confirmed visual records are uncommon in the state, making this especially significant. Each sighting strengthens our understanding of the species’ distribution, habitat use, and conservation needs.

The Mishmi Takin remains one of the least-studied large mammals of the Eastern Himalaya—making moments like these invaluable.
