The #VijayanagaraEmpire was based in the Deccan Plateau region in #SouthIndia. It was established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I of Sangama Dynasty. The empire rose to prominence by warding off Islamic invasions by the end of the 13th century.

Portuguese explorer #VascoDaGama discovered a sea route to India in 1497-1498. An unnamed Indian navigator he hired in Kenya directed the journey from east coast of Africa to what is now Kozhikode, India. That arrival is romanticized in this 1880 watercolor.
