The mission of my business Indic Creations (https://t.co/PGxe8DmEGe) is to bring the very best of indian textiles and artisanship to the American public.
Why this business?
Growing up, I saw my father travel the length and breadth of India for work and always bring back a unique piece of textile, saree, wall decor or art that was unique to the part of India he visited. Our home was always full of painted and crafted wood and metal work, scarves, shawls, sarees...each a unique representation of the part of India it came from. He also brought back stories of the artists who made those items. Whether it was tussar silk from Bengal, block printed bedding from Rajasthan, phulkari quilts from Punjab or kanjeevaram silk from Tamil Nadu. It was endless and diverse.
This business is in a way my tribute to my father's open mind to admire art and skill wherever he went.Thank you dad!

I will continue to listen to what our customers admire and curate the very best from India, bringing affordable luxurious items that pay fair wages and build the local economy right here in America. That's why I started this business and i look forward to connecting with my community here in minnesota and across USA.

I had draped this saffron-colored Mekhela Sador for one of my events yesterday. In the middle of the mandatory photo session, my usual photographer Suvarna suddenly exclaimed, ‘Tai, what a beautiful Aboli colour!’

The moment I heard the word aboli, my mind was instantly transported straight to my childhood days in Goa. In the Konkan and Goa region, aboli plants bloom in every garden. It was even the state flower of Goa once.

There is a poetic silence in the very name aboli. It means one who does not speak. But why was this particular radiant orange-saffron flower given the name aboli? After all, aren’t all flowers silent? Yet, this one alone bears the name that signifies quietude.

Perhaps it is because aboli never blooms with fanfare. It does not have the regal elegance of a rose, the seductive fragrance of ratrani, nor does it dissolve into the morning dew like the delicate parijata. It does not light up the evening with its heady perfume like jasmine or mogara. Aboli simply exists, blooming silently, unnoticed, understated and hesitant, like a shy, introverted girl.

My mother tells me that during her college days, all her friends used to call her Aboli. She truly embodied the name, gentle, soft-spoken, introverted, lost in her own world. Even when someone spoke to her, she would respond with a quiet smile and a few measured words, just like the aboli flower itself.

But when I look at the English name of this flower, it amuses me. Aboli is called Firecracker flower in English! What a contradiction! In Marathi, the name Aboli signifies silent and demure, whereas in English, the flower is compared to a bursting firecracker! It feels as though this flower bridges the two contrasting temperaments, my mother the quiet Aboli, and me, a perpetually lit firecracker!
