The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day is one of the most Texas things I've ever read: Last Thursday, a high school football game here in Texas was played under a Rattlesnake Advisory. It's true. Prior to Thursday night's game between Kaufer and Corpus Christi John Paul II, the Riviera Independendent School District posted the following announcement on social media:

"⚠️ FOOTBALL GAME SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT
Due to the increased presence of rattlesnakes in the area, we ask all parents and spectators to please use extra caution while attending tonight’s football game.

For everyone’s safety, please do not allow children to play in the long jump area of the football field or underneath the stadium seating.

Please stay alert, supervise children closely, and avoid areas that are not designated for spectators.

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe! ⚠️"

That's right: not a tornado warning or a heat advisory, but a rattlesnake advisory. Folks in other states might think that's crazy, but, hey, this is Texas and this is high school football that we're talking about. I can hear the conversation now: "Grab the lawn chairs and the snake boots, honey, kickoff is in thirty minutes.”😃

Does anyone remember this amazing story? On July 2, 1982, a truck driver from California flew 16,000 feet into the sky in a lawn chair. Larry Walters, 33, from San Pedro, had dreamed of flying his whole life. He bought 42 eight-foot helium weather balloons, tied them to a regular Sears lawn chair, strapped on a parachute, packed a BB gun to pop balloons to descend, a CB radio, sandwiches, and a six-pack of beer.
He expected to float a few hundred feet above his backyard. He cut the rope and shot up like a rocket — to 16,000 feet. He drifted directly into the main approach path for LAX. Two airline pilots radioed the tower: they had just passed a man in a lawn chair holding a gun at 16,000 feet. For 45 minutes, he floated over Los Angeles, freezing cold, too scared to shoot balloons because he might fall. Finally, he started popping balloons one by one and slowly descended.
He landed tangled in power lines in Long Beach, California, causing a blackout. When police arrested him, they asked why he did it. He said, "A man can't just sit around." The FAA fined him $4,000. He became a national folk hero — Lawnchair Larry — and inspired the movie Up.

I stopped posting about 9 months ago when 2 men from the NY Post showed up at my house, filming my daughter and me, because I had the audacity to tweet that she shouldn't have to keep playing boys in a girls bball league. They put an unemployed homeschool mom of 3 as the sole cover of the NY Post for something that is so elementary, fundamental and obvious that it feels absolutely insane that we are still discussing this. Stop with the "it's only a few" argument... since when is that a reason to not care about injustice and the truth?

The WNBA should be courageous. Stand for women. You can't stand for something you can't even define. Acknowledge that the inherent differences between men and women were the whole reason we needed the WNBA in the first place. Boundaries, clarity and exclusion are not hateful in sport... they're the prerequisite to playing and loving the game. Without the lines, without the rules, without the honesty about who's in and who's out, there is no fair competition.
