When school voucher proponents came up with a plan to let the billionaires buy the state legislatures I don’t think they anticipated just how unpopular billionaires would turn out to be
I talk to as many Trump supporters as I can these days. Which is how I know that his education agenda is raising all kinds of red flags. From vouchers to controversial picks to lead the Dept of Ed, Trump is charting an unpopular course, & losing some of his base as a result
If school administrators actually start using this new TAG program, I could see this causing even more teacher turnover for those who want to keep chasing these sign on bonuses.
Republicans at the federal level secretly destroy the administrative state.
Mayor Hogsett secretly gives away public land.
Democratic City County Councilors secretly work with Republicans to destroy public education.
My latest constituent email, Democracy Dies in Darkness:
I wasn't surprised that the far-right flopped in Texas. I've been interviewing conservative Republicans all over the state and they're not just unhappy about school vouchers. It's the total dominance of big money and the concentration of political power. https://t.co/avC0ahEswo
🎥 This morning, Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson joined @WISH_TV to share how #RebuildingStronger is transforming @IPSSchools:
✅ 700+ kids now have high-quality Pre-K access
✅ 3,000 more elementary students in STEM
✅ Music & computer science for all middle schoolers
Change is here! 💡 #IndyEducation #TeamIPS
New Indiana bill would dissolve public schools in any district where 51% of students attend a private school, charter, or homeschool. Remaining district schools would become charters. I see 101 constitutional, policy, & financial problems. https://t.co/t8kkgWofIL
Many GOP legislators really do want to protect public school funding—and avoid a bad voucher vote against their communities.
But national lobby $$ have squeezed them into impossible spots with billionaires, their governor, and small but 💯 voucher-focused parts of their caucus.
The Indiana GOP is cutting Medicaid services due to a lack of sustainable funding. At the same time, the GOP spent over 2B on private school vouchers and is projected to allocate an additional 1B to sustain and grow the program.
Education reform doesn’t have to mean private K12 tuition on the taxpayer dime.
Rural and regional grants; high-dose tutoring; GYO and other teacher pipelines; literacy and STEM learning; early education, CTE and college-access; school meals and wellness supports; HVAC, tech and transportation upgrades; funding adequacy—and yes, public school choice. And more.
All are serious education policies that states can do to reform and build.
I’m proud to join so many community leaders in unwavering support of Indianapolis Public Schools and Superintendent Aleesia Johnson. 🏫🚌💙 With our maintained support for our city’s public schools, I’m confident they will continue to deliver for Hoosier children. ⭐️ #INForAll

We’re seeing tremendous progress with our middle school athletics facilities! These projects will give more students opportunities to participate in our programs where we see student athletes improve & excel academically, socially & emotionally, & athletically.
We’ll give a full in-depth look in the spring semester as the projects are completed and our @IPSSchools students step out onto the new spaces!
Fave piece I wrote this year was this essay w/ @Edu_Historian about how the Democrats were losing young people by insisting that education = economic opportunity. Spoiler: we were right! https://t.co/YQWGz0Ydz2
