🌍✨ We imaged a black hole by turning Earth into a telescope.

Using very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), the Event Horizon Telescope synchronized radio observatories across the planet with hydrogen maser atomic clocks (precision ~10^-15).

Petabytes of data were recorded, physically shipped, and combined using Fourier reconstruction — simulating a dish the size of Earth.

Result:
The first image of the black hole Messier 87*.

We didn’t photograph the black hole itself —
we captured the glowing plasma around it
and the shadow carved by gravity.

This is what planetary-scale science looks like. 🌌
