Gold miners were already working on small rafts on the Puruê River in the Amazon in the 1980s. But after former President Jair Bolsonaro took office in 2019 with the promise to legalize mining, hundreds of industrial-sized dredges began operating in the region.
For me, it was amazing to see these dredges. They really are industrial beasts, which have a certain amount of luxuries that I hadn't seen before in remote jungle areas," says Bram Ebus, Research Coordinator for Amazon Underworld.
