We have a number of items relating to William Goad's convoy activities in our collection, including the Albert medal he was awarded for the rescue of Captain Maud. The image shows a beautiful clock which was given to Mr Goad by Capt. Maud by way of thanks for saving his life.
We were visited yesterday by Paddy and Lesley Goad from Cambridgeshire. Mr Goad's father, William 'Lofty' Goad was involved in the rescue of survivors during the sinking of HMS Somali. #ArcticConvoys
At the service a new bronze plaque was unveiled, along with two interpretation panels next to the bridge. Our representatives were proud to lay a wreath at this important event.
Museum representatives recently attended a service in Kylesku commemorating Operation Source, a daring raid to sink the German Battleship #Tirpitz by midget submarines (X-Craft) carrying explosive charges. Loch Cairnbawn at Kylesku was the training ground for the operation.
The raid took place in September 1943. None of the midget submarines survived the mission, but two made it through the defenses in the fjord in Norway where the battleship was sheltering. They laid their charges on her keel and as a result the Tirpitz suffered extensive damage.
@Barlow31 Iβm afraid we cannot broadcast in person events at present. There will be some Zoom events this Winter season though, so keep an eye out here for announcements

Some superb maps in the National Archives including this one, showing the route taken by the Arctic convoys. Churchill called it βthe worst journey in the worldββ¦
A merchant sailor remembers the Arctic convoys during World War II.Melton recalls how he was sent as a cadet from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to serve on the Liberty ship, Cornelius Harnett. He describes the days spent in the port city of Murmansk.

We also had a good anti-aircraft armament and we hoped to be able to do something with our guns against the torpedo bombers which we knew were bound to attack."
