Chris Finlayson: The Pinnacle of an NZ traitor.
Most people will be familiar with Chris Finlayson recently sharing a private text from Stuart Nash. However, here are a few other things he's done:
1. He enacted the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011, which critics argue contained flaws that transferred rights over parts of New Zealand's coastline to Māori that had previously been available to all New Zealanders.
2. He oversaw legislation granting legal personhood to Te Urewera in 2014. This meant the land was no longer owned by the Crown and instead became a legal entity governed by a joint Crown–Tūhoe board. Since then, Tūhoe has removed and burned several Department of Conservation (DOC) huts, arguing they were symbols of colonisation and that visitors should respect the forest on Tūhoe terms. Hunters and trampers have reported being threatened when entering the forest, which has considerably reduced public use. Pest management has also been criticised as being out of control under the new joint management.
3. Since retiring from Parliament, Finlayson has used his public platform to aggressively target populist politicians:
- He publicly condemned ACT's Treaty Principles Bill as being highly destructive to race relations.
- In May 2026, he publicly urged the National Party to "extricate themselves from this grisly coalition and declare war on New Zealand First."
- In July 2026, he leaked a private text from Stuart Nash to the media, causing a backlash that led to Nash resigning as a New Zealand First candidate.
Be careful of Chris Finlayson. He wants to destabilise the government and advance co-governance to continue his legacy.
