Uganda is grappling with a serious mental health crisis, with suicide being the fourth leading cause of death among young people. In 2024 alone, there were 190 reported suicide attempts. Experts point to factors such as unemployment, poverty, violence, and homelessness as key drivers. The Ministry of Health believes the true numbers are much higher, in part because the criminalization of suicide prevents people from seeking help. Urgent action is needed to shift the focus from punishment to prevention, advocating for a national policy and more accessible mental health support.
