From being declared biologically dead in the 1950s, #London's River Thames is now a hub of life thanks to #conservation efforts. Through our #MotherThames projects we're working hard to ensure it stays that way! #TuesdayThoughts
Wow. This farm produces 15% of Australia's annual tomatoes using #solar power and seawater. It uses zero fossil fuels, zero soil, zero pesticides, zero groundwater.
We have the solutions. Let's implement them.

The outcomes of this project = Assessment of local fish (including the #criticallyendangered Goliath Grouper), management plan, two marine protected areas established, increased employment through socioeconomic alternatives and more!
SOS Pesca = Cuba's first attempt to develop community-based marine management programs that align fishermen and their families, federal administrators, protected area officials and local governments towards a shared vision of #sustainable#fisheries
The aim is to incorporate indigenous knowledge into research to get local communities involved in conservation

These have been seen to be successful in marine projects - vital as 74% of fish recorded to be overfished
Mika Peck did a seminar on whether Paraecologists are an effective approach for community based conservation in biodiversity hotspots...
What is a paraecologist? Someone who has no prior experience in the field but has indigenous knowledge and training from specialists

America’s obsession with lawns is unsustainable. They are mostly non-native (european turf grasses) & require an extraordinary amount of water - around 9billion gallons per day in the US! We need to reconsider our idea of “beauty” in landscaping. Let it go #wild instead #2019EBE
If you're as clueless as me and need to know more about what our government aim to do about the #climatecrisis and #extinctions that are occurring, check out this article from the @guardian before you vote in the #GeneralElection2019

Asian tiger mosquitos shows recent #AdaptiveEvolution in European populations. One study compared them to original populations from Vietnam, finding #TransposableElement insertions - creating the difference in temperate and tropical populations
#genetics#2019EBE#study
Transposable elements can copy themselves into other DNA fragments...which can promote genetic diversity, especially good for prompting a stress response!
#DNA#genetics#stressresponse#diversity#2019EBE
Transposable elements have a large role in cancer...as they can stop tumour suppressor genes from doing their job...however, it appears they're not all bad...
#2019EBE#cancer#genetics
Transposable Elements are DNA sequences that can copy themselves and move to different genomic locations.
Especially abundant in Eukaryotes making up 45% of human DNA and 80% of Maize DNA!

Could #rewilding be the new approach to control increasing #wildfires? Large herbivores limit available fuel for fires (reducing leaf litter and density of vegetation) which decreases their frequency & intensity. Current strategies seem inadequate as Cali burns.
