Songbirds were not happy with this owl's presence. I would never have had this encounter if I hadn't checked out their alarm calls. This will never happen again.
@DocomanDaveo Because there are crimes which enforcement stops at the state lines, and crimes which don't.
Plus liquor and other substance laws are different from state to state, or even county to county within the same state!
@2wiceB@RolandGunnTN My father was born in Rolling Fork but grew up in the Arkansas Delta. Visiting his child hood haunts, I found AR very similar to the MS Delta. In his time rice was a large crop that the state relied on. Most of his classmates were the children of rice and soybean farmers.
@birdmoder I'm more confident comparing my photos to Sibley's guide at times because he draws out the birds at several viewing angles and calls out their features in the description, and it's all on one page. That plus the normal range appearance maps packs a lot of info into one area.
Barn Swallows around this building have harassed crows (pictured), black vultures, hawks, ospreys, seagulls , and even herons and egrets if they fly too close.
@glenwoods A few that didn't quite fit the post. The crow can see them but can't do much. The swallows for their part never make contact as far as I can tell. It also wouldn't be very smart to do this intimidation routine alone so several swallows will take turns diving at the threat.
Northern Rough-Winged Swallows perching. Plus a Barn Swallow taking its turn harassing a crow (more of this later in the week). All of the local swallow species are active and foraging to feed the chicks.
@glenwoods I'll have a post with more photos, but there seems to be a perimeter that the swallows will not let anything predator-shaped cross unopposed. And given that swallows out-maneuver insects in flight, retaliation by anything that's not a falcon or Buteo-type hawk seems pointless.
@AndyLongfellow9 Hadn't even thought of mink, they aren't really around here. I'd put them in the same category as an otter though. The Heron is risking injury.
@LAChas77 I refuse to do business with the town of Rosedale after a cop pulled me over there and blatantly lied about how fast he'd clocked me. Saw the out of County tags and figured it was his day.
I have paid the fine and that's the last money I'll spend there ever.
@AndyLongfellow9 I've never seen them take a water mammal but I'll tell you the likelihood I rate each:
Muskrat: 100%
Baby otters: 70%
Baby nutria: 70%
Baby Beaver: 60%
Adult otters: 40%
Adult Nutria: 10%
Adult Beaver: 5%
Herons and the big egrets will also steal fish from pelicans here in MS.
