No, you do not need to keep the wallet app open. You connect once, sign once when you press Start, and after that the wallet is not involved.

What matters is the page: mining runs while the tab is open and visible. Switch to another tab, minimise the window, or close the page and mining stops. Bring the tab back and press Start again.
