product ideas that sound good but rarely A/B test well
- multi-step tutorials that teach you how to use the product
- asking users to pay *only* after they've fully experienced the product
- (same on referrals - upfront is better!)
Lots of awesome people actively looking for and asking me for roles in startups - hit me up for intros
- 4x VC roles
- 3x Business Ops
- 1x Designer
- 1x General Council/Legal
- 1x B2B Sales
- 1x Marketing
Amazing just spoke to a guy who has bootstrapped his medical device company for 5 years, over 1.1m people have used his product & he has managed to self-fund TGA & CE Mark & almost done with FDA & manufacturing right here in AU
It's easy: just write cheques!
If you like the founders*... write a cheque
If you like the market (& you like the founders) ... write a cheque
If you like the idea (& you like the founders) ... write a cheque
Write LOTS of cheques ... or, write none
* esp. their track record
“The traditional M&A process is outdated, inefficient, and combative. Which is why we’re opening up our Atlassian Term Sheet to fix it.”
I love this company. Open. Innovative. Honest. Even in legal! 👏🏻 to the $TEAM on a big step for everyone. https://t.co/IdPPtA2nrc
“On avg, the Cos that raised As had 30 coffee meetings with individual investors. 50% of these meetings led to pitches to individual partners. ~30% of partner pitches led to full partnership pitches. On average, 1/5 partnership mtgs produced a term sheet.” https://t.co/7N5b2pJ10X
Love this discussion around balancing long term vision with short term discipline. Only two timelines matter in startups - 1) what are you doing in next 6 months? and 2) where are you going to be in 5 years? Forecasting anything in between is make believe.
Congrats to the @SquarePegCap team on not one but two imminent IPOs in Prospa and Fiverr. A coming of age moment for the Australian venture ecosystem and a sign of much more greatness to come. 👏
Just a reminder for startup founders and CEOs. You only have three things to sell:
1. Product to Customers
2. Company/Equity to Investors
3. Vision to Employees
It's not uncommon in the startup world for a new idea to be dismissed by know-it-alls simultaneously with growing rapidly among early adopters. I'm not sure why, but these ideas seem to do even better than the ones that aren't dismissed by know-it-alls.
One of the secrets of B2B entrepreneurship is that a good enough product with exceptional distribution will win more often than an exceptional product with mediocre distribution.

Best way to fund your business:
#1 - by your customers; #2 - by your suppliers; #3 - by yourself; #4 - by your bank; #5 - by your friends & family; #6 - by angel investors; #7 - with venture funding of various sorts.
A nice rule of thumb for fundraising “a company should always target to double valuation round to round and never dilute more than 20% per round” thanks @avc @fredwilson https://t.co/mxA7k1EafW
"We learned a lot"
This phrase is almost always a euphemism for “We've spent nearly all of our capital, don’t have traditional traction, but need more money.”
Those four words that will chill a VC’s soul - here's what you *should* say if you're running out of cash/time. 1/9
@PaulBassat@SaysSmithy@NGillezeau@alexmccauley@dpetre I would also say to many advisors who don’t have specialist R&D backgrounds or have never worked in AusIndustry involved. As with most things in Australia when the pendulum shifts it goes to far the other way.
