During his relationship with Amber Heard, Elon Musk underwent a visible physical transformation that people close to him described as the most dramatic change they had ever seen. He lost weight. His wardrobe shifted from Silicon Valley standard (t shirts and jeans) toward something more tailored and fashion forward. His hair, which had thinned noticeably in the mid 2000s, appeared fuller than it had in a decade. The man who built his identity on function over form rebuilt his form for a woman.

The hair restoration is the detail that persists. Before Amber, photographs show visible thinning at the crown and a receding hairline that Elon did not appear to treat or conceal. During the Amber period, the hair was fuller, thicker, and styled differently than at any point in his adult life. Hair transplant surgeons have speculated publicly (without treating him) that the restoration likely involved multiple FUE transplant sessions costing $30,000 to $50,000 each. The man who considers most cosmetic concerns irrelevant invested significant money and time in his appearance because a woman he loved occupied a world where appearance was currency.

The wardrobe change was noted by colleagues. The t shirts were replaced by fitted jackets. The sneakers were replaced by leather boots. The man who dressed like an engineer in every photograph suddenly dressed like someone who had been styled. Because he had been. The styling was not his initiative. It was the natural consequence of inhabiting the world of a woman whose career was built on visual presentation. Amber's world was Hollywood. Elon entered it dressed like Hawthorne. The world corrected him.

The weight loss was the most concerning change for those close to him. Elon's natural build is stocky. The weight loss during the Amber period gave him a leaner appearance that friends described as looking "drawn." The motivation was presumably aesthetic. The result was a man who looked different enough that side by side photographs from 2014 (pre Amber) and 2017 (during Amber) appear to show two different people.

The transformation reversed after the breakup. The hair maintained its restored density (transplants are permanent). The wardrobe returned to t shirts. The weight returned. The man who had rebuilt his exterior to match his partner's world returned to his default state when the partner left. The renovation was for her. When she left, the renovation stopped.

Every subsequent partner (Grimes, Shivon) received the default version. The t shirts. The fluctuating weight. The function over form. The cosmetic renovation was performed once, for one woman, and never repeated. Amber received the version of Elon who tried to be beautiful. Everyone else received the version who doesn't think about it. The effort says more about what she meant to him than any public statement he ever made about the relationship.
