Welcome to the Kachikally Crocodile Pool, deep in the heart of The Gambia. This isn’t a zoo, it’s a sacred shrine, older than time, alive with stories whispered through the water.

The one I'm touching right now is 30 years old, and it's one of the gentlest in the here .
But don’t be fooled. That calm? That’s patience, not weakness. When these crocodiles feel threatened, or when someone mocks the sacred ground, everything changes. They slap their tails hard against the water, a thunderous warning. The guides say, “If you hear that sound, don’t wait for the second one. 🏃🏃

The eldest crocodile, known as Baba Jato, is over 70 years old. They call him the watcher.
He doesn’t move much, but when he does, even the wind seems to pause. Locals believe his spirit protects this place, and when he looks at you, the ancestors look too.
If your heart is heavy with evil or doubt, you’ll feel it instantly, a chill, like the air itself rejecting you.

The water here, known as the healing water, is said to cure sickness and bless the barren with children. People come from far and near to bathe, to drink, to seek mercy from powers beyond the physical But the elders warn:
“Only those with clean hearts can touch the water and be healed. The spirits know who you are.”

Standing here, surrounded by creatures that have outlived generations, silent, ancient, watching, you realize this is more than nature.
It’s a meeting point between the seen and the unseen. A place where faith and fear share the same breath.
