The programs targeted were not obscure corners of the federal budget. The defendants are charged with fraudulently accessing food assistance, Medicaid, housing benefits, Social Security, and disability programs — the full stack of the American safety net, 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 and theoretically reserved for the most vulnerable among them. The investigation is ongoing, which means the 15 charged are likely not the complete picture.
