A poignant reminder of the damage boxing can do to even the very best. This is Donald Curry, a former undisputed welterweight champ and once pound-for-pound No. 1 in a rehab/ care facility. If you haven't donated, then please go here. Tragic! 😢

8th round heavyweight action between George Chuvalo (left) and Pat McMurtry, on October 17, 1958, with McMurtry winning a 10-round unanimous decision in the MSG debuts for both boxers.
The AP, which unofficially scored it 8-2 in rounds for McMurtry, would write:
"George Chuvalo, a thick-legged, wild puncher with a solid left hook, staggered Pat McMurty in the 2nd round, but couldn't follow up. After that he spent the night bleeding from the nose and eyes while McMurty forced left jabs and right uppercuts into his face. Chuvalo weighed 207 1/2 to McMurtry's 188 3/4."
Chuvalo came into this bout at 15-2-1 while McMurtry entered at 29-2-1. He'd fought less than five weeks earlier, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, KO'ing James J. Parker in the 1st round for the vacant Canadian Heavyweight Title.
Pat McMurtry, 33-4-1 as a pro with 25 KO's, was a contender in the Heavyweight division during the late 1950s. He retired in early 1960, after he suffered a hard knockout and a brain injury against Eddie Machen in the 1st round, on October 27, 1959, in Portland, Oregon. He later became a referee, primarily in the Pacific Northwest, as well as throughout the world.
McMurtry had wins over a faded Ezzard Charles, Bobo Olson, Rueben Vargas, Howard "Honeyboy" King, and Chuvalo during his 5-year career (1954-59).
He died April 17, 2011, after a battle with liver cancer, aged 79.
