During our conversation, he spoke fondly of the unwavering support of his Indonesian fans, expressing how grateful he is to see their love remain constant throughout the years. He also shared how warmly he is welcomed whenever he visits Indonesia, a gesture that continues to leave a lasting impression on him.

Start your coverage of Kim Soo-hyun with an apology!

Start with an official admission that you acted extremely unprofessionally and almost destroyed a person's life. You and those like you are the ones who, in the pursuit of traffic, disseminated lies and unverified rumors, becoming the stronghold and main weapon for haters.

You released dozens of dirty articles: from 10–15 aggressive pieces during past scandals and the constant highlighting of others' debts to a series of 'exclusives' with fake screenshot messages and dubious rumors. [NEWS] “A Second Kim Seui” Could Appear Again - Even the National Forensic Service Says “Unable to Determine,” AI Fake Voice That Swayed Public Opinion

The criminal allegations against Kim Seui, head of the YouTube channel HoverLab (Garo Sero Research Institute), who was arrested on charges of spreading false information about actor Kim Soohyun, are not limited to just one or two offenses. Among them, what dealt the most devastating blow to #KimSoohyun was an audio file believed to have been made using artificial intelligence (AI) to sound like the voice of the late actress Kim Saeron. If the suspicions had been raised only through a real person’s press conference or documents, they could have been dismissed as “one-sided claims.” But once they appeared in the form of an audio file that sounded like the deceased’s actual voice, the public accepted it as “credible evidence.” This case clearly showed why false information created using AI is even more dangerous than traditional false information.

AI That Captivates Public Opinion, Difficult Investigations Make It Dangerous

The actual impact was huge. The false information did not remain only on YouTube. Once the voice recording was released, the allegations raised by HoverLab took on the appearance of a “revelation backed by evidence,” making them easier for the media to quote. According to data from the Citizens’ Coalition for Democratic Media, from March 10 to March 17, 2025, the eight days after HoverLab raised allegations involving Kim Soohyun and the late Kim Saeron, 2,026 news articles repeated those claims. As suspicions about him spread out of control, Kim Soohyun held a press conference and denied the contents of the recording. However, because of the “fake voice that sounded real,” convincing people was not easy.

The dangers of AI-generated false information do not end there. Even if investigators suspect manipulation, proving it is a separate issue. The National Forensic Service responded that it was “unable to determine” whether the conversation recording of the late Kim Saeron released by HoverLab had been manipulated by AI. This was because the file examined was not the original file. Unless the police can secure information about how the file was created and distributed, it is difficult to definitively conclude whether it was manipulated, and that gap can be used as a defense argument by those who spread false information.

The police have already concluded that the Kim Soohyun recording was “circumstantially manipulated.” While they cannot be 100% certain it was altered, they reached that conclusion after considering the file’s distribution route, the existence of different versions, statements from related individuals, and signs that KakaoTalk conversations had been manipulated.

Attorney Ko Sangrok of Law Firm PIL, representing Kim Soohyun, told Hankook Ilbo, “They likely took into account the fact that a recording said to be from a conversation that took place on the same day and at the same time was distributed by the informant to multiple people in completely different versions.”

The difficulties faced during the investigation stage could eventually lead to problems of proof in court. Lee Changhyun, a law school professor at Korea University of Foreign Studies and a former prosecutor, said, “In the past, forged documents could be identified visually through handwriting or official seals, but with AI-based evidence manipulation, it may be difficult to determine how to prove it during a trial.” However, he added, “Given the rapid pace of AI development, analysis using today’s advanced technology should make it possible to sufficiently verify and prove fabricated information afterward.”
